Cool Box Running Times
I'm going away for a few days and I'm borrowing a halfords cool box for the trip.

I recently added a couple of power sockets to the rear of the 110 that take the power from the constant live feed in the speaker panel.

I have a split charging system as well.

The question is how long can I leave this cool box plugged in for without killing my battery? I think I read somewhere that the draw is 3.5a.

As the live feed is from the cranking battery, should I link the leisure battery when the car isn't running?

Hello

I've used one on big trips and it's been fine, freeze the contents first if it's stuff you don't need straight away. If on a ferry or leaving the car for a few hours I did unplug it...didn't want the car not to start.


Last summer I used the same fridge all holiday off grid using a 120w sollar panel and leasure battery. In the day the battery topped up enough to run the fridge all night.

I think that will be thermoelectric type box that will be running more or less continuously. They not ideal for this type of use.

For the sake of argument, if it is a 90ah AGM Battery you've probably got about 45ah of useable power, so you might be able to run the fridge for 12 ish hours. 3.5 amps X 12 = 42ah. Whether it would still have enough to start the motor after that, I don't know, but it could be marginal.

If you linked the batteries you would obviously have more reserve. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

i use one of the halfords boxes occasionally i use a second battery in the back held in with a small ratchet strap to power the cool box and keep it charged by plugging it ito the cigarrete lighter, always remember to unplug it before switching off the ignitoin and plug it in after starting the engine that way there is no chance of flattening the main battery, a bit heath robinson but it works. i will get round to fitting something better sometime. nobody is perfect but being Scottish is a start

Thanks for the replies.

That give me a much better idea of what I can and can’t do with this!

I do have a large separate leisure battery but I don’t have anything for it. Is there such a thing as a kit that I can attach to the battery to make it usable? I saw you can buy marine battery boxes but this battery is too big!

I would make a feed from the other battery.Does the cool box not have an automatic swith off at a low battery? Roel

Don’t think it has auto cutoff.

Think I might end up buying a proper fridge at some point...even though I’ll probably only use it once a year Rolling with laughter

I have one rear seat out with a Waeco mounted permanently. Only switch it out with the seat if really needed. Once you get used to it...
So get a proper fridge! Laughing

SWMBO and I use a Halfords cool box for long warm/hot continental trips. We have found that the box is very well insulated and the addition of frozen food/freezer packs mean that we only run the cooler when the engine is running - 5 - 6 hrs a day. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.
