Best for Boost??
Hi folk

Just got five Defender Boost 16" alloys today and now need to put rubber on them.

Looking at 235/85/R16's but what brand??

Can you advise me on a good make of tyre mainly for roading and suitable for occasional off-roading.

but performace rating for fuel economy is very poor although grip/braking is good

How much do you trust these rating having not considered this before.

Well for reference, I switched from the BFG KO to a BFG KM2, and have not detected any change in fuel consumption, so personally I would take those 'ratings' with a large pinch of salt for a brick sided Land Rover.

I suspect the aerodynamic drag drowns out any slight variation in tyre drag for economy purposes.


As for grip/braking - its what you would expect for a top heavy vehicle on the road, especially in the wet - drive with care! 2005 Td5 90 XS

You'll find that the performance rating is generally poor for all LR-sized tyres - it's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.

There are lots of choices that would suit your stated usage. The BFG A/T is a perennial favourite but if your likely off-roading is mild then the more road biased offerings from Continental might suit. It's quite a personal choice and we all have our favourites. What other priorities might you have? Noise, winter rating, etc?

My personal preference is the General Grabber AT3, which is quiet, excellent in the wet and mountain/snowflake winter rated so handy if we ever have any of those things again. The downside is that they don't look quite as rugged as other makes.

I’ve had km2s, ko2s in 265 75 16 and at3’s 235 85 16. No real difference in fuel consumption or subjective handling. The only real difference is the weight of the km2s, the latter two were 10kg a corner lighter, it did make the acceleration a touch better (still a defender thought) braking however was much improved with the ko2 and gg at3.

I am watching this with interest as I need a couple of new tyres myself.

I have looked at different one's and have in my mind that the Grabber AT3 is a contender. The best price I can see is £144 fitted. It seems people who have used them have favourable reviews. Euro ratings - economy D, wet B, noise 73, weight 15kg

BFGs are £169 fitted. It seems they are highly thought of but then people also mention they are not the best in the wet. Euro ratings economy F, wet B, noise 74, weight 22

The other ones are Falken Wildpeak. These are £119 fitted but have not seen any reviews. If anyone has any experience with these please let us know your thoughts. These would be an economical option if they are a decent tyre. Euro ratings economy F, wet C, noise 73, weight 20

Given your usage, a bfg AT is probably a bit extreme, the general grabbers are a good choice, there’s also Goodyear duratracs which are a favourite of the d3/4 owners. I run the falken wild peak at’s on my freelander 2 and they are very good for what they are and would definitely recommend them

Cooper Discover AT3 a good road bias all terrain tyre, I run them on my pick up can't fault them, better on road than Bfg At2 and won't leave you stuck either when the white stuff falls.

Oh and they are cheap too Whistle

I find the Michelin Latitude Cross to be a good comfortable tyre. It is good in the wet and is a capable all round tyre. I have them on two Pumas.
Also worth a look is the Davanti Terratoura A/T which comes with the snow flake symbol. Another good all around A/T tyre. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
