Td5 rear wiper electrics

My rear wiper was fine, then it wasn't! It didn't fail while in use, it just didn't start from rest.

I checked the fuse - fine.
I checked the connections on the back of the switch - fine.
I removed the motor and put 12v across the contacts, that was also fine.

So, I conclude that the problem is either in the loom, the rear wiper relay, or the switch?

First problem - I can't find any reference for where the rear wiper relay lives.
Second problem, I don't know what voltages I should be looking for at the plugs with the plugs removed.

I have got a Haynes Manual wiring diagram and a multi-meter, but my knowledge of auto electrics is a little wanting.

I know that electrical systems contain smoke, and that if you get a small leak a little bit of smoke pressure escapes and things slow down. A big leak means all the smoke escapes and then it is knackered. No smoke has escaped from mine

Can someone please point me at where to find the wiper relay. Also, what voltages I should expect at various pins on the wiper motor plugs.

I would check the wiring where it runs between the rear door and body (in the convoluted sleeve) as this may well have fatigued and broken.

Does your heated rear window worK? This is normally the first thing to fail in that wiring bundle.

What year of Td5? The rear wiper electrics changed when the 2002 dash came in.

What year is your TD5? If it's post '02 and has the later rear door then the relay is inside the door itself:

It is a 05, so the relay is as shown in the pic - thanks Anorak.

The heated rear window is working OK and I waggled the wires in the sleeve to see if it made a difference. I'll get back once I've checked the relay.

Sadly the relay works as advertised, so that is another easy fix eliminated.

All down to any advice on voltages to look for then please guys.

Fit the relay again and turn the ignition on.

Get a length of wire, and stick one end in the relay holder cavity with the black/green wire, and tap the other end on a ground point (e.g. a nut on the door). This should trigger the relay and make the wiper run.

If it works, then the trigger from the rear wiper switch is broken somewhere.

If not, then the ignition supply to the door is the next place to look.

I did as advised thanks Martin.

Tapping the Black/Green to earth did not operate the relay.

I then took what, to me, seemed like the next logical step. I also took a 'flying lead' from the White/Green (solenoid supply) and put a voltmeter across the 2 leads with the intention of checking the voltage. This DID cause the relay to operate, but not the motor to run. After a couple of clicks of the solenoid, the 10A fuse blew. Perhaps it wasn't such a logical step as I'd thought!

Most likely the wiper shaft in the motor has seized.

Thanks Mo, but no.

As I said in the original post, when I put 12v across the motor it was fine. It is well greased and really smooth running.

I've done a bit more dicking about with flying leads and a multi meter.

The relay was working and putting 12v to the motor on the Red/Lt Green wire.
The motor is good - I had already tested it.
That only really left the Earth wire for the motor. Yup, that was open cct.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find the break - if not, I'll just splice in a new earth.

2004 Defender 90 2.5 TD PU Auto Caledonian Blue

Sorry to jump on this thread with more questions, but my problem is similar. 2004 90 TD5. In rear quarter panel my white/green wire has become detached at the 6 way plug. Re-connecting it does not allow the wiper to function. However, if I apply 12v at that point to the white/green wire, wiper works.

I believe dashboard switch is a negative switch (one black/green, one black, one orange illumination wire)

So problem seems to be between dashboard switch (or front of the car) and rear quarter panel. Any ideas? Is there a relay between switch and rear quarter panel? Cheers
