Fox wing mounting question
Evening,

Would really appreciate some expert advice from you practical and experienced types out there.

I have a 110 Puma station wagon with a Safety Devices G4 expedition rack on it. I’m looking to mount a fox wing awning, but due to the luggage rail on the rack, I’m struggling to see how the standard tubular fixings Oztent supply would work. These are predicated on fixing to a flat tubular section, but that wouldn’t work as the upright sections on the luggage rail get in the way.

Sadly, neither Oztent nor Safety Devices were able to give any practical advice. Short of getting a bespoke mounting made up, I wondered if anyone had these awnings and my type of roof rack and has found a solution they could share please.

Cheers

I ended up fabricating custom mounts to fit my Foxwing to my Patriot rack, which I imagine was a vaguely similar problem.

Many thanks Blackwolf. I’ve been scratching my head and messing about with my old meccano set trying to work out how to do it. I suspect you are right though and I’ll need custom mounts.

Can you post a pic of the problem please.

I didn't use any mountings with mine. Fox wing and patriot rack on 110. I just used bolts in the lower channel (3 bolts) and drilled through the side of the rack. Top of foxing level with top of luggage rail. Cheers

Thanks for this. I’ll post a pic tomorrow. I’ve seen the flat dog mount and I’m not not sure that would work (but would be delighted to be proved wrong because that mount is about £11)

Right. Attached (hopefully) are a couple of pictures of my roof rack (Safety Devices G4 expedition rack, and very similar to the LR expedition rack).

From my research, the problem I have is the luggage rail. The majority of the awning mounts I have seen are L shaped, and designed to fit to a flat section of the roof rack, and with the upright part of the L being the bit you bolt the awning to. The uprights on my luggage rail block that part of the mounting.

I am trying to avoid drilling into the structure of the rack if at all possible.

why cant the L come out off the rack bar (not the luggage rail bar) and point down to hold the awning? Cheers

Many thanks Gents - appreciate the responses.

JST - apologies. I am a bit confused as I thought each of the rack bars end with a vertical luggage rail bar, so you cant hang anything down because the luggage rail upright blocks it? I think I have misunderstood what you mean.

Bear1000 - I have not seen that thread. Apologies. Someone has asked the same question I mine already!

I think the thread that Bear100 has linked to will answer your question but when I had an SD rack some years ago, I fitted all sorts of things to it with either large 'P' clips, stainless saddle clamps or U bolts and various strips of 2mm or 3mm thick aluminium. You just have to be a bit inventive. Darren

LandRoverAnorak. I think that you are quite right. Thanks to all of you for your comments/responses. It looks like P clips and U bolts are the way forward!

Just by way of 'closure' on this thread (and in case anyone is interested), I did manage to fit the awning by using a mix of P/U bolts. However, the only place you could really mount it this way was on the luggage rail, and I found that meant that the awning was just a couple of inches too high for ease of use.

Instead, I got a fabricator to make me up L shaped brackets out of 4mm aluminium. I have fixed these to the side of the luggage rail to create a series of flat panels. The awning attaches to the panels. It is just the right height now, and I have to say that the flat surface on the top of the brackets is pretty good additional storage space. Picture below.
