Brake Pad Change Defender XS fitted with brake pad sensors
Hi,

I’m just about to order some pads for the first brake pad change on my 2015 90XS. I’ve got the brake sensor light coming on on my dash quite often, which is what made me check the calliper pads for wear.
I’ve never done a pad change on any defender before, and, when I went on line to buy pads I was expecting the suppliers to offer pads “with brake sensors” fitted. But all I can find is standard pads with no sensors. Even the sites that ask for my registration number are not displaying any pads with brake sensor electrics fitted and some details for oem pads specifically recommended for my vehicle even state “wear indicator not fitted”. . which is making me think these must be the wrong pads ?

So, my questions are:-

Is the pad sensors just a separate component fitted separately ?

and

Do the brake pads for otherwise similar vehicles have different part numbers for vehicles with or without brake sensors ?

and finally . . is there any makes of pad that are particularly highly regarded or should be avioded !!!

Thanks,

Nostromo

What are 'sensors'? Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

You sure it's not the brake fluid level warning light? Rgds.

There are no brake wear sensors. Must be low brake fluid warning light. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

As noted above, no Defender* has pad wear sensors. As the pads wear, more fluid is needed from the reservoir in order to make an application and consequently the fluid level in the reservoir lowers, which may result in the low fluid warning lamp flashing occasionally (it is most likely to do so if brake when going down hill, due to the design of the reservoir and location of the float switch).

If this is happening you are wise to check the pads (all round) for wear, but you may find that you just need to top up the reservoir a little. I find the the level needs to be maintained virtually at the bottom of the filler neck to guarantee that the light doesn't flicker on hard downhill braking.

* I should probably say "no pre-2020 Defender" since the new thing may have them.

Thanks everyone for the above info.

Just checked it out and indeed the brake fluid is a bit low . . . front pads definitely need changing out for new whilst the rear pads have approximately about 4mm still to go to be as low as the fronts.

Thanks for the info about the warning light . . . I was convinced I was looking at a pad wear sensor warning on the dash !!!... so we live and learn !! Very Happy

It'll also explain why i couldn't find any pads with wear sensors on line !!! Rolling with laughter

Just got to decide what sort of pads to buy now . . . last lot I bought for my other vehicle (T4 VW van) were Pagid and they've been very good on the van so I might go with those ?

Cheers and thanks again.

Just as an aside . . . .

Does anyone know the correct spec brake fluid for a 2015 Puma 2.2 90XS ?

I've found part number LR052652 mentioned in my service paperwork but have no idea what brake fluid spec this represents ?

Thanks Smile
