Re-skinning a 90 rear tub
Evening all,

Some may have seen in the TDI area, my rear tub is quite badly damaged at the r n/a corner. At some point in its 25yr life some biff has reversed into something I’m guessing causing a huge ripple in the panel.

I have spoken to a recommended body shop, he can’t even quote for the work as he said he has no idea how long it might take or if he’s even capable of fixing it.

Indy in the area has quoted me over £2k for the reskin and some other minor work. The majority of the cost is the panel repair.

Sadly 300tdi tubs in any better condition than mine are difficult to find. It’s been suggested to use a TD5 tub (plentiful) and reroute the filler pipe. Is that viable?

Another thought I have had is to attempt it myself/with the help of somebody who knows what they’re doing. Is that an option?

My understanding is it’s rivets and spot welds that hold the skin in place, so it would be a matter of removing those, removing the panel and then marine bonding the new one in and replacing rivets?

Any thoughts, offers of assistance, advice or experience would be appreciated!

How are your welding skills? I'd have thought it I'd you can find a good Td5 tub it'd be cheaper and simpler to change to a Td5 rear tank instead?

Could leave the original underseat one there for extra fuel or even use it as extra storage space by removing it.

There's a guide on LandyZone I just came across which shows the steps I think. Ed

We successfully panel beat out a big dent in a friend's pickup 90 rear corner with some bits of 2x4, a couple of clamps and a big hammer.

If the panels a "write off" in your opinion maybe you can do a similar trick, it's surprising how much better it can look even if not perfect. Some of the ripples I've seen on brand new Tdci panels have been quite spectacular. Obviously inferior to our older Tdi era panels Rolling with laughter Ed

I think it’s beyond beating out. 😬

Another suggestion has been to fit a TD5 rear cross member and fuel tank.

X-member was replaced about 3 months ago as it was shot, if I’d know that it would be better to use a TD5 one to fix the panel I would have done!

That’s repairable! I think you need to find a better bodyshop.

I’m an ex panelbeater so do have some knowledge on the matter not just internet bs Mr. Green Ray

To be fair to him, he had a quick look and said it would be pain to do.

After the eye watering quote I might take it back to him for a proper look 😂

I’ve had way worse than that beater out on a pick up truck. You would never have known the damage was there. Try someone else.

A new rear panel costs in the region of £450 and for a body shop to fit its a simple job and probably quicker than trying to panel beat.

Goose foot panels seem like a good option, plus they’re at Preston which means I can pick up when visiting family!
