If you want to convert to the 2-nut system, discard the spacer, discard the stake nut, and fit the two plain nuts with the correct pattern tab washer between the nuts. The bearings, the seal, and the thrust washer are the same for either system.

It is a very simple upgrade and makes maintenance and adjustment much easier.

The spacer is in between the bearings. The spacer is not at the back of the hub. You have bearing, spacer, bearing, washer, then stake nut. We have bearing, bearing, washer, nut, lock washer, 2nd nut (I think)

When you're shopping for the nuts and tab washers, buy new hub oil seals as well. They're not expensive but you have to take the old one out to remove the inner bearing inner race so that you can get the spacer out. Not only is it bad practice to reuse them, it is almost impossible to remove them without damage.

Starting at the inner face of the hub working towards the wheel, you should have:-

Oil seal
Inner bearing
Nothing where the spacer used to be
Outer bearing
Thrust washer (the thick washer with the flat to match the flat on the stub axle)
Inner nut (the end-float/preload adjusting but)
Tab washer (the thin bendy one with the flat to match the flat on the stub axle)
Outer nut (the lock or jam nut)

The tab washer must be bent over one face of the outer nut, many people also bend it over one face of the inner nut, which isn't strictly necessary but doesn't do any harm

? sorry lost here a bit. if hes is not changing bearings he doesnt need to take the oil seal out. the spacer can come out the front of the hub. why do you need to take the rearward inner race out? Cheers
