United Kingdom 1998 Defender 90 300 Tdi CSW Alpine White
Help with white colour please
Evening all, I need to tidy up a few bits of flakey paint from stone chips etc and am struggling with paint colour. I’m stuck at home so can’t go to a paint shop and there’s no code on the vin. The rear right hand corner was really rusty and paint had all pretty much come off so I tried chawton white on there but it’s no where near anything on the body. Mine is darker and more off white. I dismissed alpine as I thought it would have more blue in it and be a brighter white but having looked online it may be that? I’ve added 2 pics. The door looks a different colour as I cleaned it with g3 to see what colour it was. Any help appreciated while I’m home bound
Dave

Someone else asked a similar colour question and it was suggested to use this site https://www.vindecoderz.com which would help ID the factory colour

Thanks for that, I’ve not seen that site before. It found my defender but couldn’t give colour sadly.

If the paint is original it will be Chawton white. I had a Japanese 50th of that model year and colour.

That was me suggesting www.vindecoderz.com for Rutland Red earlier today, was about to suggest the OP tries it but beaten to it Laughing surprised it doesn't give the colour, when I've used it not only does it tell you the paint code it also tells you the colour too, not always easy to find though as all the spec is set out in a continuous block of text & it's easy to miss bits I've found.

My vote would be Chawton White, my 1995 300Tdi 90 was that colour. Looking at the photos it looks as if your paintwork has done what mine did & oxidised a bit making it look darker. Have you tried cleaning up the panel next to the capping you've painted to see how they compare?

So I went back out last night and cleaned up the panel next to the rear capping, the paint brightened up a bit but is nothing like the chawton capping. I’m going to ring Land Rover in Monday and Ask if they can decode the VIN. If not I’ll just have to try a can of alpine and maybe a can of Ivory . Will post how I get on.

You will need to be very lucky to get a decent colour match with pre- mixed paint. Your original paint will have faded/changed over the years.
The only sure way is to buy paint and mix to your actual colour by trial and error. Probably not an option.
Hope you get a decent match using other colours.

Yeah you’re right on that, I’m just hoping for somewhere near. As it is the chawton I put on is a mile off. I might get lucky hopefully

Regarding 'Landrover White' a friend always tells me it is the color code 'rack 5 bottom at the local home improvement store' ... they took what was left on the shelf Wink. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

It may end up being rack 5 bottom shelf haha. I’ve bought a can of hycote ivory white. Early indications are it’s not a bad match. The chawton is a decent match on the bulkhead inside so if this ivory isn’t too far off I’ll go with that. My awful blending skills will draw attention away from the colour difference anyway haha
