Assuming they're original, the rear drive flanges are likely to be dry, rusty and the primary source of any drivetrain clonks. An easy fix to fit properly greased replacements or one piece drive shafts.
![]() Click image to enlarge If you're unlucky, and this one is a bit of a lottery, it may also be suffering from wear in the spline-jointed output shaft from the main gearbox to the transfer box. A much more expensive and involved fix is required for that. There's a lot been written about this problem and a search for 'output shaft' will generate a stack of bedtime reading. Thanks - that's very helpful. I'll ask the question and see if any paperwork, it sounds like the vehicle was a spare but maintained.
Sounds like general care / attention required |

A quick check with JLR might be an idea to check if the Defender has had the recall for the oil pump completed.
Not quite sure on the Vin range, though I had it completed on a 2012 (March) Like LRA has eluded to, plenty of reading on this subject by searching Q421 on this very forum. Good luck with your new Defender ![]() |

Check floor mat, pedals and steering wheel in order to know if milage is real. Brake pads and tires can serve as indicators, too. I suppose the average milage was higher ... |

Check for recall to stop intercooler pipe chaffing on steering joint. There should be a bracket on the alternator to hold the pipe.
