Do I need a new battery?
Basically is my battery f**ked or is the charger I'm using not big enough?

I'm no genuis with electrics and batteries so bare with me Embarassed

A week ago the 110 wouldnt start, radio reads battery voltage is at 11.5V, so I used the jump leads and started it from my wifes car, drove it for a bit no problem, next day same again 11.4V.

Didn't need to drive anywhere and the neighbour gave me his ctek XS0.8 he uses for his bike to see if that helps.

Connected up and it took like 2 days to get to step 5 (fully charged) however never seemed to get to step 6 (pulse).

Tried to start the car and it wont start! Radio reads 12.8V but keeps dropping as I watch it with key in ignition.

Connect jump leads to wifeys car again and try starting but nothing again! Radio reads 14.2V but still no start?

Do I need a new battery? Or a better charger?

Apologies if I seem stupid Laughing

Yeah, it sounds like your battery is toasted..

How old is it?

11.anything is either very flat or knackered. If a battery is very dead or a cell has collapsed then jump starting sometimes doesn't work as the dead battery sucks too much

A healthy battery that has settled will typically be 12.6-12.8v. Less than 12.5, needs a charge. You should get at least 14.something across the battery with the engine running if the alternator is working properly.

One issue on Td5s is that the ECU doesn't like low voltages, a vehicle will a dead battery will sometimes crank fine with jump leads off another vehicle but will not fire. ---

See if you can borrow a CTEK MSX 5 or upwards and do a reconditioning cycle.

If the battery is really old though, might save yourself a bit of faffing around by getting a new one.

Oct 2009 vehicle is still on original battery but with the CTEK never gets to pulse, just stays on the green battery section.
Running a reconditioning cycle overnight tonight on it.

Anyway, I am midway installing my dual battery system so I have a spare if the original dies,

Sounds like the battery probably has a dead cell. Worth a recondition if possible as KMAC suggested. Tayna batteries (online and offering quick delivery) are well priced. I got an Exide 019 from them back in January.

This little diagram helps when measuring voltage, your’s is looking to be rather knackered.

This is the only information on my battery, I'm guessing im best replacing with another 110ah battery?

I understand brands are personal preference but do i need 110ah?

I don't run any additional lights or electrical stuff other than immobiliser, radio and wipac led replacement lights all round.

Every site seems to think my car is a TDI when i put the reg in but its deffo a 110 TD5 Confused

For reasonably priced powerful battery have a look at Numax dual purpose ( leisure and starter)

e.g. got one for these from £80 at Tayna
Numax CXV30HMF Sealed Leisure Battery 12V 105Ah - there was an ebay 20% off deal at the time so normal price around £100

As you say you may not need 110Ah but what you need to check is the CCA to start your car so get at least 720

I like the Varta that came with the car so would probably look to replace with one of those

I think TD5s had 069 battery size as standard.

The numax cxv 27 and 30 batts are superb value for money. I fit them to ours when any need a replacement battery. Either 2 x27s or 1 x 30 depending on vehicles use. Cheers

Right bought battery from tayna, brilliant service by the way! 250 enduroline 12V 100ah, 760 cca i think.

Connected up and cleaned out battery box a bit, im guessing its regular that the boxes get filthy with dust?!

Anyway it still wont start and the radio reads 12.4V, I've put it on charge presuming it may need a charge first?

Or... do I need to start looking at other possible problems?

Starter moter solenoids and plunger has recently been changed and also crank shaft position sensor changed recently too.

Again... sorry if i am being stupid!
