Anyone bought one of those cheap 63L cement mixers off eBay?
With the lockdown, we're going to set about re-pointing some of the house.

I'm thinking a cement mixer would be easier work than hand mixing the lime mortar.
We have no other building work planned so I don't really want to spend a fortune on a quality mixer.
Hiring could be an option but we are planning on doing the work over a few weeks, so hiring could get expensive.

There are some really cheap 220W 63L mixers on eBay for +/- £150, some of which have a 2 year warranty. They all look to be the same, so I guess all coming out of the same Chinese factory.

I'm only planning on mixing small batches of mortar a a time, so the capacity isn't an issue.

But are they any good, or just junk? My gut feel says buy cheap, buy twice!! On the other hand, if it does the job and then gets put in the corner of the garage for the next 10 years, why spend more?

For £100 more there are more choices with higher capacity and 450/550W motors. Wondering if a higher powered version may be better, even if I don't fully load it with each mix. The smallest Belle mixer can be had for £240 and the larger Belle mixers seem to have a good reputation.

Has anyone used one of the cheap ones off eBay and how was the experience?

Cheers.

If it's only for one job I would hire. We got one for £20 per week delivered/picked up.

Although you could buy one and then stick it on eBay when you're done? WARNING.

Have always used belle mixers. Not sure if the same applies to lower cost options, but they mix better fully loaded rather than part loads.
If you are mixing lime mortars you could mix a few mixes and store as they will keep for a long time if kept covered if it’s lime putty. If you are using hydraulic lime this would keep mixed for around a week depending on weather conditions and kept covered. Also it remixes more useable the second time around.
One possibility for small scale use is using a plasterers type paddle mixer and a gorilla tub, takes up less space to store it, easier to clean than a mixer, ie less mess generated.
Just make sure you gauge the materials for each mix to get a uniform colour match.
Good luck and hopefully it is not too warm to dry out your work area too quickly. Thumbs Up

I've got one that looks just like this, but it's all black:

I can't recall what wattage it is, but I've run about 20 bags of ready mixed concrete through and it's still working fine. Well made it is not, but for occasional DIY use it's been ok. I did think about hiring, but my projects always take weeks and I don't work fast, so it quickly becomes uneconomical. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I ordered a 500W Handy mixer this afternoon from Mower Magic, only to get a message saying they didn't have the one in stock that they thought they had!

So back to square one.

I've decided to go for something similar to the one you linked to Bluest. I figure a 500W motor has got to be e better bet than a 220W one, especially if I don't fully load it. The entry level Belle mixer is out of stock everywhere.

I guess with most of us on lock down, DIY projects will be on the increase.
