Does anyone know what this white wire is that it bolted on top off the earth terminal?

Stupid bit of design really as there is so little thread on the earth post to secure it, it has come loose & I cannot tighten it without the thread stripping!

Thanks v much Richard

Not tried yet Martin but that will be my next step.

It comes from the loom so I'm a bit puzzled. I don't think there is anything non-original on the vehicle unless its something to do with the tow bar.

I was just going to find another earth in the battery box to use but doesn't seem much of an option at first glance.

Thanks for your wisdom!

That yellow relay is an addition from the non bog standard options (even an XS) so its likely being used for spotlights or something heated perhaps? The white wire shown there is the relay coil earth so it'll be prohibiting it from operating. If it was tow bar it would be related to 13 pin electrics and not 7 pin as there is no call for a single relay on 7 pin.

If you have an SVX with the two lights in the cubby box, it may well be those that the wiring is for, as I haven't seen anything on the normal wiring diagrams to indicate the option on my 110 or any of the others I've worked on. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

As per Martin's post, I'd be tempted to switch everything on and make sure it's all working. If everything is working I'd be tempted to tape up the eyelet and leave it. Defender 90XS SW

Aaaah of course it's the 13 pin/12S towing electrics ground.

It "should" go to a stud on the inner side of the main chassis rail - see step 32 below

Instructions: https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...20TDCi.pdf

The ground terminal clamp isn't designed to have extra terminals attached, unlike the positive which has threaded holes. You will have an extra positive wire going off to that yellow relay as well.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The plot thickens!

No sign of old spotlights & no lights in the cubby box

The seats are heated as is the screen on my SVX; will need to do some more investigation but if it is the relay coil earth then I'll have to find an alternative earthing point so it will start. Richard

Thank you to all - nice to have a little bit of detective work during such restrictive times!

I'll use the chassis rail ground as suggested.

The original reason for delving into the battery box was to fix a remote terminal for my CTEK so I'll have to find another suitable earth for that.

- will keep me busy tomorrow Wink Richard

It's a T-shaped bolt head from underneath, right? I replaced the bolt with a longer one and filed the head to shape.

As your Defender is fitted with a tow bar have you thought of connecting your CTEK through the towing socket. Martin has adaptors for both 7 and 13 pin Defender 90XS SW
