Strange ECU issue
Hi folks,

Friend is having an issue with his TD5, it cranks but won’t start. None of the glow plug or fuel pump relays click on when you crank. The coolant gauge goes into the red. pumping the accelerator 5 times doesn’t do anything.

The ECU when I try and read it with my nanocom says it cannot communicate with the ECU, but it can with the Alarm and ABS ECU. If I put the ECU in my truck, it reads it fine, if I put mine in his truck I get the same unable to communicate. All the fuses and relays are checked good and working, all have power. ECU has power on pin 33

No immobiliser lights, everything looks fine, battery is ok, and it spins over fine.

We are a bit baffled.

check the fuel cut off switch under the bonnet.

most of your issues happen when thats bad or there's a cut off switch fitted to it for security.

Been though all those. Everything is good. the fact that the Nanocom cannot read from the ECU just seems odd, even with an inertia switch or fuel cut off I would still expect the ECU to be readable

It worked before he parked it up, he's been away for a week or so and now he has this issue.

If you hear click from main relay when ingitinon on, and inmediatelly again, when ignition off, software in ECU does not run. The same is no MIL and GLOW indicators, no fuel pump noise in tank.
If you have tested cut off switch under the bonnet (check also wires to the switch), than ECU is probably not working. Try any TD5 engine ECU - you need at least working MIL and GLOW indicators and running fuel pump. No need to run engine thie way, no need for diagnostics for this basic tests. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
