Argoshield bottles, without going to BOC
I have a size X Argoshield bottle. This one has lasted me at least 18 months. I've had the welder for nigh on 15 years (bought from a BOC dealers), but now they're stating I need to pay a monthly rental of (about) £9, which would be ridiculous for the amount of gas I don't use.

Just spoke to one of BOC's advisors and in short, they're not interested, their "business plan works for them" so stuff any small time users who don't need much gas.

So, anyone got any leads where to either get a refill (In the past I used a parent companies account but it's a bit of a faff and anyway they're locked down at the moment so I can't get hold of the chap I need to get the OK) or another supplier? I read that machine mart do MIG gas, but on their site it looks like piddly little bottles.

Apparently BOC barcode the bottles now so swapping for a friend is hard to do.

A fair bit of rent-free welding gas available these days. Mine is through a company called Adams Gas, they have stockists in various parts of the country. The big one I see in most places is Hobbyweld.

They all do an Argoshield equivalent.

Brilliant! just googled my nearest supplier and it's a place we have an account with at work (car & truck motor parts).

£60 initial "rent" one off payment, then £40 for each refill. Paying £100 up front is worth not having the hassle of BOC (or, if anyone knows him, dealing with the utterly miserable bloke at BOC Swindon)

Thanks all Thumbs Up

A couple of years ago on one of my sites we demolished a few buildings. Inside one was a pub CO2 bottle which I have been using ever since as mig shielding gas. Personally find very little difference. Could be worth considering if you have a friendly landlord locally. > 110 XS Double Cab

We are a BOC agent at work but we do a lot of SGS gas which is rent free and you just pay a deposit. Worth a google. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

I dumped BOC for my Argon last year. The bloke at the new place, on hearing I'd still been a customer of theirs, said "Oh, you're the one are you?"

I bought a Tig welder last year and shopped around for the gas. I found both Hobby Weld and Adams Gas about the same price with respect to deposit and refills but Hobby Weld impose an admin fee should you decide to return the bottle. Granted this would only happen if you gave up welding but none the less I went to Adams Gas because of this. Also the stockist is easier to get to than Hobby Weld but I say again the admin charge killed it for me. Mike
