I think you would need to be very careful, if the paintwork has already been damaged by poor polishing then the paint may already be very thin. Maybe best to take it to a professional detailer and have the paint thickness checked 1st.

Gtechniq do a P1 nano polish which is very safe to use with a machine and can even be used by hand, excellent for swirls and holograms

I'd second what Scoobeenut recommends regarding paint thickness. Problem is you don't know how much paint thickness has been lost due to previous machine polishing. Defender 90XS SW

rather than do it yourself and risk buffing thru the already thin paint i can recommend matt at revive over in Yorkshire.

There’s loads out there just pick one designed for polishing with variable speed settings, I think I got mine from tool station for about £35. getechnic also do the application attachments.

Good luck - once you start down this avenue it’s a slippy slope!! You’ll have an array of pads, polish of various grades - fillers, waxes, clay bars, detox’s and the likes!! Go for a finer polish and build your way up - you don’t want to burn through and do any damage - if someone’s already been there and you have no idea of thickness I hope it’s not too severe. I used to have a black beemer, some of the hardest paint ever - the landy is considerably softer, and even a light blow over with a fine polish and micro fibre cloth and some poorboys black hole provides a grand finish! Enjoy this journey!!!

Thanks all. I don’t think that whomever did the polish has gone too deep, it looks like they literally spent 30s on the panel and whipped across as the swirl marks are long. Classic dealer quick polish before sale.

I wouldn't let the dealer wash my van when it was in for servicing. He said 'But our cleaners wash those £70,000 Jaguars out there' and I thought to myself, yes, and they're all covered in swirl marks.
Being white, mine's not too bad, although there have been occasions when I can't be bothered to wash it 'properly' and it's just had a hosepipe and microfibre, but if the virus continues, it's going to get the clean I always intend to give it but somehow never quite manage. |

Its not too hard to do in fairness - so long as you are not after a show quality finish- it gets far more complicated and multi stage from that point.
When I worked at a small VW dealer we used to regularly have to machine red and white cars due to the issues with the paints oxidising. We generally used couple of different pads and grades of compound- then a polish, then a good quality wax, then a gloss protector/sealant. key thing was to always keep the panels/pads wet- I understand that the folk who do detailing go into special lubricating fluids- but we just used to ensure we kept moving across the panels and kept it damp with water. Just had mine main dealer serviced and said the same. I’ve just spent two days giving mine that clean and still got the roof to wax. It looks almost as good as when it came out of the showroom. |
