I think the new truck looks great, but its what is under the skin that counts..

a few points to ponder ...

1. what are your thoughts about putting complex electronics in a utilitarian vehicle?
2. Historically have JLR been any good at designing/testing and fitting complex electronics in vehicles?
3. Spline shafts / build consistency?
4. "they all do that sir" - enough said
5. do the key demographic for these vehicles (Farmers, Services etc) have £80k to spend on a vehicle
6. build quality .. (not withstanding UK technicians vs whereever they are being made now)

I'd like one but I'll wait for version 1.1 as I don't want to be an extended JLR tester

my 2p ..

Farmers, services etc are obviously not the target market for this vehicle, and does any ordinary/working person have £80K knocking around for a car? 2011 110 USW

Not any more. The key demographic for the new Discovery Defender is the wannabe urban explorer who works in banking, wears designer gear, and regards Kenton Kool as a role model. Farmers, services, I don't think so.

It is a good demographic to target, with loads of money to throw at fashion accessories, but a fickle one. There's better be a BEV solution available when internal combustion becomes unfashionable.

Reading that review - the videos are of high speed driving off-road! Are LR trying to get every byway in the UK shut down?

Just like many of the old Defenders, shiny paintwork and big alloys with all the off road stuff bolted to them just for the look.

4 and a half stars in Autocar but reading between the lines of the last paragraph I'm not convinced.

I liked the Pistonheads review, I might take issue with several of the statements/sentiments, but was surprised by this:

" Land Rover has pulled many strings (and officially greased innumerable palms) for permission to repeatedly drive into the conservation area".

From some perspectives (low down, view from the front quarter) it's a lovely design. In most, it's a fat bas***d. Seriously. And not only in the exterior profile. Look at the window apertures, especially the second row. It's like the designers and the engineers had a drunken fight. For many years I wanted to buy the next-gen Defender. Now I want to see one in the metal, to be sure I don't want to buy one. LR has now trashed the Disco and the Defender (yes, subjective opinions). Form, in this case, is utterly, utterly not a reflection of function.

... and the roof rack ladder on the side? With a 1st aid/glove box on the other side? And a special dog spray kit. Really???

Gerry and the LR design team ... do you spend your time in a nail bar near Gaydon? Stop. Restart the T5 production. Bang out at "good enough" alu shell to sit on it. Fit a variety of interior options from Farmer to Budget to County (remember County?) to Chelsea. Lean back, and rake in the money. Yes, I know, Greta says no, but you can still design a decent 4x4 in Greta World. The buyers will pay.

And (the new) JLR CEO, grow some and fire the muppets.

Do you think LR will take up the challenge to let them take a New Defender on the Rubicon Trail Cool ?
