McGovern Interview on the 2020 Defender.
Wow. All I can say is ‘wow’. This bloke has an ego that is considerably larger than the monstrosity he has just designed and is clearly (stubbornly) so proud of. And the idea that we viewers/buyers can’t have an opinion on the design (such an iconic design and arguably one of the main reasons we own >2016 Defenders) because we’re not professionals like he is, is arrogant beyond belief. Now I fully understand why this ‘thing’ was created.

Marketing 101. Keeping telling people then perhaps someone might belive it.

Looking at global Jeep sales and the projected Ford Bronco sales and the flexibly built into the Wrangler and big Bronco JLR could see their US market slowly sliding away before it has even started.

I guess we still don't have exact money on the table sales figures yet?

Either way McGoven's pension is safe.

"Land Rover’s Spiritual Leader Makes No Apologies for the Design of the New Defender."

I can't believe he actually called himself this!

There's so much in that article to take issue with.

He really was a hater of the previous Defender.

My big hope is that the new boss will clip his wings and he'll move on and engineering can have more of a say in future vehicles.

Good morning Supacat

Didn't Putin give himself some over the top job title the other month

Has moving the manufacturing to an ex Soviet country given him ideas.

Will his new blazer be adorned with lots of medals....

Will he bring back an overly complex version of the Lada Niva

Questions, question.

He does however say in his answer to the first question "we knew all along we were going to bring the Defender back" so there is hope for the future, I just hope we don't have to wait too long for it! Rolling with laughter

I hadn't realised either that we don't fit accessories, we fit "visual metaphors".

"Spiritual leader of the brand"! What arrogant, pompous tripe! The man is clearly an unhinged narcissist. There must be real engineers spinning in their graves at this distasteful rubbish.

Q:I feel like the degree to which it was rounded off, at least around the edges, was a bit surprising.

A:You’ve still got strong intersections: shoulder, collar, all those things. And then the rear, that’s really hard. A lot of the softening at the front is to do with aero. And actually — you look at the last [Defender], even on those corners, those corners were bowled off.

Good question! This answer and the other reference to "safety legislation" suggest that the design of the front might have been influenced by engineers rather than stylists. Then again, how much more aerodynamic is a brick with rounded edges? He did rather dodge the question though.

Don't know about you but I feel all my cars aren't anchored down properly without a plastic square on the window to obscure the view out.

Markb110 referred to the Bronco and the US. If JLR were aiming to sell the new Defender in large numbers on the other side of the pond then if Jeep and Ford go head to head in the battle for sales of serious off roaders then I suspect JLR will be the losers. Also I suspect that the Bronco Sport will also reduce JLR's market share in the medium SUV sector with the Discovery Sport. Defender 90XS SW

We do ~ why is that a problem for you?

It matters because this guy appears to have had a big part in moving LR from the company that was proud to be making the old Defender, proud of it's engineering roots, to a company that is happy to denigrate it's past and recent products:

"But the [side of the old ones] was so flat because the pressings were such crap. On some of these [older] Defenders, you look along the body side and it’s like the Atlantic Ocean."
