Calling all DEFENDER Detectives - Mystery leak-black exhaust
I hope you all can help me with a challenge.

I have no error codes (MIL - error lights) etc.

Here are my symptoms:

When driving and I shift into 4th through 6th I get a black smoke out of the exhaust. Driving in town in 2nd and 3rd, no smoke.

When I am on highway it goes into limp mode. I pull over, turn off and re-start and all good.

I checked and I am losing Oil slowly, somewhere, not out the bottom, no leaks under engine.

I opened hood(bonnet) and I discovered black liquid spray on the Top Coolant hose area. The top coolant hose has a cover sleeve over it and when I squeeze it I get a good amount of oil on my hand. I also see oil spill on the pump in the attached photo.

I also had the little black plastic tube just pop out and clear liquid can out and I put it back in and re-clamped it. I don't know if that has anything to do with any of this.

If you all have any suggestions for me that would be great, I don't want to drive it until I have a plan, get parts and can drive it to the shop where I can work on it.

your burning oil by the sounds of things get a mate to sit inside and press the accelerator see if is producing black smoke . any oil over the air air hose filter box any inside the air box ? clean all the oil off gunk will do it then try to locate the leak . check the coolant see if its sludge like if it is oil is entering the coolant system possibly a head gasket good luck rob

But what could be causing the black smoke from exhaust?

Black smoke from the exhaust can be caused by burning oil but it is more likely to point to over-fueling. This might indicate faulty fuel injectors, sensors, or some type of issue with fuel pressure. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Interesting. Do you know if any of these things would throw a warning light. I am not getting one and it is odd.

Oil tends to burn blue, black is more likely to be over-fuelling. It could be something as simple as a split intercooler hose. It is quite likely that it won't cause the MIL to illuminate, but there may be stored DTCs which provide a clue.

If it's going to limp mode there must be fault codes stored.

I didnt see a picture , small hose popping out? Do you mean oil feed on back of vacuum pump, ( it may be a return)

Black smoke is unburnt fuel, indicating too much fuel for available air, so check air supply. Hose integrity.

Without seeing it sounds like two problems.

1. Vacuum oil pipe came off, hence loss of oil and oil in engine bay.
2. Over fuelling die to lack of air, split intercooler pipe expanding releasing air at higher pressures.

Any noises under boost?

I expect if you drive it harder up the rev danger in lower gears it will do the same as 4 to 6th. Cheers
