More robust? We are running lt230 with 44s and 400hp from lm lump, it's not struggling with that. Lt230 must be one of the most reliable items lr make/made. Cheers

I have one in my TD5 too, But its been tuned a little, maybe to help it out when he used it for towing. I find it much more nicer to drive and if not more eco than the 300 I had. I am not planning on towing anything at the moment, my dad has joked about taking mine away, but all I will get is the clutch is on its way Rolling Eyes Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Do you have cruise control? I believe that doesn't work if you change to 1.2. Roel

I had 1.2 but swapped back to 1.4 1.2 just killed the performance especially when towing. Have fun be happy

A remap is definately needed. My 110 (1.2:1, 235/85's) is like pulling away 1 gear up all the time, but the ECU tune helps a lot.

When I had 255's on it, it was horrible at hill starts, used to just pull away in low 2nd then range change to high.

If I ever go back to 255's then I'll swap the box back to a 1.4

As above my 110 300tdi had its fuel pump optimised by Gwen Lewis before I had the 1.2 xfer box fitted - it went like the proverbial off a shovel Very Happy
After fitting the 1.2 gears + Alisport intercooler and straight through exhaust, it went well, towed with ease and returned better MPG. Thumbs Up
Logical really, to pull higher gears you need more power and torque. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

It really depends on what you use the car for.

I've had the 1.2 and it works great for me. I don't tow a horse box around although i did tow a series 3 for over 100km and it was good.

Yes, remapping will help your pull away on steep inclines but if you are running around in town then i guess you don't need it.

Cruise control will work, if you change a few numbers while remapping, basically copy the valid gear ratios from a disco into it and it's done or install a speedo healer, depending on your area of expertise. I've tried both ways. I would say adjusting the valid gear ratio is better and the ECU will get your "correct" road speed.

Fuel economy is better and you cruise better on the highway with lower revs.

Some will say fit the global roamer (roamer drive) overdrive unit, but that $$$ a little much to stomach unless you have a mint transfer box and don't want to mess with it. advantages, you have split gears (more gears to play with) and a way better cruising vs the 1.222 box.

Nothing changes with the low range ratio.

It's all up to you and everyone will have their own experiences. If you have a broken t-box, then no harm trying the 1.222 disco box while you can rebuild your 1.410 box if you really don't like it and then sell the 1.222 From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. I think overall the 1.4 is probably the way to go, I've mostly given up driving it at 70+ because of the wind noise as much as anything! If I'm ever really in a hurry I put headphones in or take the skoda...

I really can't be bothered with having to pull away in low box when I've got a heavy trailer on!

I fitted a 1.2 to my Td5, with 33" tyres and it was fine. Yes first gear is a bit tall, not ideal for pulling away with a trailer but then if you are really in a bind on a hill you can always drop to low ratio.

Made it much more comfortable on the motorway. My understanding is that the Discovery 2 was fitted with this ratio from factory, so they didn't consider it too tall either.

However with that said - its much better with a remap, which I subsequently got Smile 2005 Td5 90 XS

Both Discovery 1 and 2 had the 1.2 box but they both ran on smaller tyres than Defenders - the nominal equivalent of 6.50's. Darren

Yes, the smaller tyres offset the effects of the taller transfer box gearing. Darren

I ran my CT Discovery on 235 85 16 bfg's and changed to a defender transfer box 1.4. as I found the 5th too big. I was changing between 4th and 5th on every small incline. The 300 tdi was taken care off by twisted animations and later I adjusted the turbo pressure and the HP diesel pump a little more.

I’ve got a 110 TD5 SW and have always been fine with the standard 1.4 transfer box. The vehicle seems well balanced and will sit happily at 65mph which seems a natural cruising speed for a Defender.

The best thing l did was fit cruise control, on the later TD5 it’s basically just two buttons and a wiring harness, as all the electronics are already present.

The vehicle has a mild remap (around 25bhp) so it will sit at 65mph with the cruise control engaged even on the steepest motorway hills.
