My New Project - and it’s green
So I’ve been a bit distant from Defenders of late. I bought a VW T4 just because I thought I should.
It was fine, but nowhere near enough room and definitely lacking the 4x4 bit.
I had been taking an interest in bigger stuff and I noticed that the first of the MAN Support Vehicle (what used to be ‘4 Tonner’ and then became the DAF and then turned in to the current 6t SV or HX60 as it’s known worldwide.

Anyway, I bought one. Whistle

So this is what I will be spending my time on. If Defenders are simply Meccano, this is meccano turned up to 11.

Good luck with it, I’ve spent a fair bit of time on them and don’t rate them highly tbh, a few common problems do come up:
Check the pins for the obd port as these are often mullered.
The egr valve can fail and it’s a right pita to do unless you have a die grinder and the skills of a dentist Rolling with laughter
Careful when driving as the mirrors can whip back and take out side windows.
Air leaks under the seat can be easily sorted by repairing the pipes.
The spare wheel is mounted on the wrong side for Uk roads

Ok that’s a few negatives and I don’t want to put you off so any problems feel free to pm me and I’ll do my best to help.

A few tips:

Front axle will auto kick out diff lock above I believe 15kpm which is read off a speed sensor so if wheel spinning above that you will be without a front difflock, use the manual gear selector whenever cross country for best results.

The space directly behind the a/c unit inside the cab cab allow a shelf to be fitted for extra storage.

The a/c unit can have a vent removed and allow a can of pop or two to be placed inside.

There is a resistor inside the a/c pack when you go in through the roof panel on top, this can fail but bridging it with a bit of cable solved this with no know ill effects.

The rattle when static is due to the lower steps being loose, some tape on the cable section can fix this.

Taping up the holes in the back can stop your kit being covered in mud.

Always close the tailgate/side panel handles as they are perfect eye/head height and can be painful.

I see many of these roll past my office window and have often thought the camper thought, but one disadvantage is that the power/cooling? pack behind the cab would make access directly from cab to pod impossible. Not a show-stopper but not ideal.

I know that many who drive them don't like them much.

Thanks for the tips Mash, anything is helpful.

@Blackwolf, a lot of people have negatives for them. But then the same people (or should I say 'people in a specific job' Whistle ) didn't like the DAF244 or the Bedford MK's. Mr. Green One of the members of the Group is an ex driving instructor on them and he loves them. But then he doesn't have to fix 'em. Laughing
With regards to the pass through. The cooling side, definitely cannot be touched (well, you really don't want to mess with). But the spare wheel carrier can be taken off which gives you some. The cab is sat low over the engine so there isn't masses of room to do one.
I thought I should, no, must have one. The more I look at it, the more I think 'for the extra engineering and cost let's not bother.'

Of course they aren't perfect. But they have one, major advantage. Price. They are about a quarter of the price of a used Mercedes or civvy MAN. Underneath they are a stock MAN TGM chassis, MAN engine and ZF Tipmatic 12 speed box

@Diesel Jim - no 330PS/1250nm torque. 4x4 with electronic difflocks on both axles and front to rear.

@Bluest - that's a MAN KAT 1. Forerunner. Used an aircooled engine, hence no radiator behind the cab. Also no ECU's so less problematic.

I totally understand why you "need" one and do fancy one myself! Better yet the 8x8 recovery variant is also now appearing on the market, that really floats my boat!

That orange EMER switch should be soft lock-wired, it’s used to kill power to the ECUs in the event of an accident, I have been told if accidentally operated it can cause damage (not sure how true that is though).

Master switch will not switch off if the ECUs can feel a draw, the easiest way to check is switch on the small cab light above the driver and wait 30s or so for it to go out. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
