Black Alloys now have white dots
I have a problem with my 18" Urban Truck Cruiser Alloys. They are in black and have been dirty for a couple of months. Finally got around to cleaning the truck and notice something very strange has happened to the wheels. There are loads of white dots all over the wheels but seem to be under the lacquer (I think). I can't see this as being chemical wheel cleaner damage as I've only had it cleaned 3 times in my ownership (as I don't mind her dirty) by the same place and they do not use anything aggressive on the wheels.
Any ideas?

I've had a few cars with black alloys before but never had any problems or seen anything like this.

Cheers

Looks like a manufacturing fault to me...
As in a problem between the paint finish and laquer.

Guess it depends how old they are really?

I had an identical issue with my wheels. This is just the early stages. All the lacquer peels off eventually. Clearly a defect in the lacquer process.

I stripped my wheels and took the opportunity to colour code them.

As above that appears to be an issue under the laquer

Appreciate the comments Gentlemen. I’ll look into the manufacture defect with Urban Automotive.

I do like what you did to your wheel Alex 👍

I'm sure it's simply a defect. however my first thought was road film remover / aggressive cleaners - do you use them or use the local 'hand wash' centre that'll use them for you?

That was my first thought too but the white spots are under the lacquer.

I popped into a wheel specialist today for their opinion. Had two of the guys look. They said it was moisture / water under the lacquer. A couple of the wheels you can see a blister in the lacquer. The other wheels we couldn’t see any “holes” but they could be behind the tire or very small. You can see on a larger white spot that you can move it with your finger under the lacquer. Really strange.

Anyway, need to take the issue up with Urban Automotive as a manufacturing defect. I think the wheels are two years old but I’ll dig out the invoice.

Cheers
Chris

Just an update (I case anyone was interested). Urban Automotive, who's wheels they are, have been great and are refurbing for me. They said they hadn't seen before and found it very unusual. However no argument and happy with the way they've been handling it. Thumbs Up

That's a good bit of customer service Thumbs Up It would be very easy for a less scrupulous company to just blame it on alloy wheel cleaner or something and wash their hands of it. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Just a quick follow up for anyone doing a search on Urban Automotive. They actually replaced my wheels with brand new ones FOC (not refurbed as originally discussed). Great customer service and a 'proper' company.

Recommended! Thumbs Up
