If you remove it then any damp, rain, or water ingress will still get in with nowhere to go.
The valve is one way only. If you get under your truck and push up on the valve you won't be able to move it as it is designed to dump water when there is no pressure from the outside. I left mine in place. I thought long and hard about removing it but decided to keep it in place. I have competed, green laned, pay and play, Marshalled as well as everyday driving in all weather's. The disposable glove solution is quick and simple and if I need to do that then I would also be in a position where I would need to cover the radiator. Also I have seen vehicles with raised air intakes fail in water. Just because it was sealed sometime in the past does not mean it still is when it is needed. Just my thoughts, hope it helps Mark |

Yes I know it's a one-way valve, it's just a concern if it will do the job when 14 years old. Testing if a air intake is still waterproof must be tricky, unless you just block the intake point itself. |

Shame the designers at the time did not add a thread and offer a screw on cap such as you get to blank off a plastic plumbing pipe.
Back in the day we had to use wading plugs for the bell housing and timing cover but the then people caused issues for themselves by NOT removing them so I guess that is one reason JLR never did it. You now have my brain ticking over...... Probably stick to the rubber glove as it works though. Credit cards arnt always the solution....

Mine still has the wading plugs for both.
I'll look around for a rubber cap, until then I'll use a glove. |

The weakest point is going to be the multitude of joints just inside the wing. Horrible design that is very hard to seal no matter what brand of RAI you have. Best option is a Southdown

I've got some pretty amazing sealants here, will give it my best.
What about the air filter housing. Do I need to work on it too? What is a southdown? |

Hi
if you take out your air box you will see some holes in the bottom. I just filled mine with plumber putty. At the same time I removed the intake vortex and plugged any holes there as well. Southdown was an independent supplier of parts for Land Rovers before they were bought out by Terrafirma. Their snorkel is no longer available looking at the current catalogue but stock may still be available via other retailers. The snorkel entered via a hole cut into the top of the wing and connected to a one piece pipe straight to the air box. none of the original LR pipe ducting was used. Worth noting that it was originally developed for the 200 and 300TDI and as such the internal diameter was narrower than the Mantec version for the TD5. Hope that helps Mark |

Southdown still trade. I just bought a new one 2 weeks ago direct from them. Also the piping is more than adequate for a tuned tdci as when you compare the standard air ducting it is smaller diameter than the Southdown. Just my 2p worth having had my 300tdi over the top of the wing mirrors with the engine running. I certainly wouldn’t run any other brand of raised air intake if you intend getting wet!
