LED internal lights, what am I missing? FIXED!!!
I ran a permanent live 12V supply to the back of 64 plate 110XS Utility a few years ago and powered IED internal lights, dog cage fans, a cigarette lighter and twin USB ports from it. The switches for the lights and fans both had LED indications. I tried to upgrade the system to new switches and it's all gone wrong. I've gone back to the original configuration but it's still not right; I'm obviously missing something simple here as it's only a simple 12V system. I've only got the lights connected up now and if the switch is earthed, only the LED indication on the switch comes on. If I disconnect that so it's working as a simple switch, the LED internal lights come on but the voltage drops to about 7V (the rest of the vehicle still has 12V). I'm flummoxed, any ideas? With nothing attached I've got 12V on my permanent live supply, and where it connects to the battery (both +ve and Earth) are tight. Question

PROBLEM SOLVED; every day's a school day. My normal thinking with odd electrics is to check the earth path so I ran a separate temporary earth cable back to the battery. Once I connected it up I noticed the LED indicator on the fuse holder for that circuit illuminated; the fuse was blown. How could I measure a voltage? That indicator circuit has to allow a small current to pass - not enough to power anything apart from a small LED but enough to show a voltage.
