Wow, this takes me back around 25 years to when I was in a similar situation building a GD427.
I think you are right - there will also be a small terminal for the charge warning light (brown & yellow wire usually IIRC) Richard Defender 90 SVX |

There are markings on the body - the one at the bottom is marked W which is the tacho output.
The larger diameter stud will be the main connection to the battery (typically done as a cable to the starter) - it should have B+ near it. The smaller diameter stud is probably for the dash warning light, it should have D+ near it. There is also a male spade on the left of the photo but I can’t make out the marking. Is there a model number on the alternator anywhere? ![]() ![]() |

The alternator’s ground reference is to the engine block via its fixings, not normally a separate cable.
