Defender Cluster Needle Motor Repair or replacement
Hi All

I am turning to thus trusty community for advice!

I replaced the dial card on my 2015 Defender and damaged two of the needle motors inside the cluster.

I was doing just fine or so I thought....rotating the needles counter clockwise and they all came off just fine without pulling the motor pins out with the needles. Replaced the card and then repositioned the needles back on the pins and reinstalled it. So didnt use the spoon method, just the counter clockwise method!

The speedo and rev counter work fine....but the petrol gauge and temp gauge just stay in the one place. Temp gauge on zero and the petrol gauge on half way. So I think my rotations may have damaged the springs inside the motors themselves.

I have tried to find someone who can fix this for me without success. I believe the two motors are what need replacing and it looks like they are easily removed from the circuit board. Does anyone have any info on who does this kind of electronics repair or failing that where I can turn to?

I am trying to avoid buying a brand new cluster - its just the two needle motors that need replacing. I do t even know if I find an second hand Discovery or Defender cluster (assuming they are the same) I can use that....but that sounds hard!

I would appreciate any help or leads to anyone who might be able to help do a repair.

The second picture shows the cluster part number and the first the two motors on the circuit board. It looks to me like the two motors have a clip to release them....so it would suggest the parts can be exchanged for replacement??

Thank you!

Hi Rugbyball,

Can I ask how you got on with your instrument cluster repair? Or if anyone else has had to have the motors replaced on the instrument cluster?

I have exactly the same issue. After removing the needles to change the fascia I suspect I have damaged the motors for the speedo and the fuel gauge. Although they do still operate, they are erratic in how the needle sweeps.

I have had one cluster repair specialist state that he is unable to repair as he cant source the motors, not doing to well at finding anyone else to put my trust in either.

Cheers

I’ve had a customer do this and I recommended to buy the cheapest D3/RRS/Freelander 2 pack and salvage the motors from it to repair the expensive Defender pack. Worked a treat!  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hi Bucko

Just picked this up. I got in contact with several folks who said they could repair or send me a replacement motor. I only had one that didnt work after I changed the dial cad....the petrol gauge.

When I shared the serial number for the instrument cluster it was either a case of those part not bing available or No one would repair or it was going to cost me my first born.

I also looked into buying a Second hand donor cluster myself and thought I might swap out the motor but that was quite costly and not sure I knew whether I could do it or would make thing worse!

I eventually found a guy in Essex off ebay who Could repair/replace. It required sending him the entire cluster which was a bit nerve racking, but he did fix it and everything was fine. Installed it back in and worked ever since.

Contact is S u p p o r t @ F i e s t a - T e c h . C o . U K or check on ebay.

Thanks for the info, it looks like the cheaper and more readily available D3/RRS/Freelander2 clusters are the solution for the donor motors.

I think I’ll be entrusting Martin’s help rather risking more damage with my heavy handed ness at removing the needles
