I know we had plumbers/joiners in doing a bathroom not so long ago, and they used thin plywood on top of the chipboard flooring. I don't know if it's "marine" ply or not, but wither way I think I'd agree that it's less likely to 'blow' and expand if it gets damp. Donald

It needs to be ply. And to be honest 3mm is a bit thin. 6mm would be the correct thickness. Plus make sure it’s the machined edges that butt to each other with cut edges to walls or under kitchen units. Also make sure it’s good quality ply from a good merchant. Does not need to be marine ply but there is a lot of poor quality ply out there that just falls apart when cut.
Make sure all existing floor boards are fixed down well,no squeaks and level when they butt to each other. If not sand flat so there are no ridges under the ply when it’s fitted on top the floorboards. When fitting use annular ring shank nails https://www.floorkit.co.uk/ring-shank-nail...BSABEgIcs_ at approx 150 mm centres and not so long as they would go right through the floor board when hammered in. Noting they may need a nail punch to set the heads flush or just beneath the surface. All sounds a lot of work I know, but like most things a good finish is all in the prep. Ideally 12 or 18 mm t&g. If you have to go thinner use 2 sheets staggering the joints between the layers screwed at 300mm centres in all directions. You can even stick the laters together with pva.
And look at something like Schluter ditara mat if you need to reinforce it further. |

As per Lanh. Just had 44 sq.m of vinyl flooring fitted in our sitting room. The guy used 6mm ply and said anything less would be too flexible . This was over toungue and groove planking. He also feather screeded the joints in the ply but I don't know what with!! He fastened the ply down with a nail gun using u shaped staples, but put loads in on each sheet. Before laying the vinyl, the floor was rock solid.

Thanks all It going to have to be 3.6mm ply. The sub floor is pretty flat so should be ok. I don’t want to go 6mm as it will cause all sorts of other problems with skirting boards and adjoining floors etc, plus the cost gets a bit high.

I laid a Vinyl tile floor recently and the instructions on the tiles stated to use min of 5mm marine grade A plywood with staggered joints and to screw down every 150mm. A relative who is a joiner told me that any less thickness can have voids in the ply due to it being so thin any pressure on top and you can break through the surface. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Karndean and Amtico recommend 5.5mm ply wood ref SP101 - this is a specific type of plywod to a BS specification that is manufactured specifically for vinyl floors. Its not cheap at around £25 for an 8 x 4 sheet but you wont regret it - I laid it under all my 'vinyl' type floors. Just Google SP101 and you'll find lots of info & videos. Cheers
