300tdi Oil Pressure Switch
Hi everyone,
Few months back, oil light started to flicker. At first, it was after the engine heat up and idling position so I ignored. After it has started to flicker at any rev while driving and solid light while idling I've replaced the switch.
I also installed a pressure gauge with a tee piece, one end oil pressure sensor and the other end new switch.
I thaught problem was solved at first but nowadays flickering oil light showed up again.

Some addition information;
Last engine oil and filter change was @211.500km in '18 August (15/40) and now it is @214.500km
Engine watchdog tm2 is installed and engine block temperature is monitored. Max 95C is seen at long and steep climbs in summer.
With the new oil pressure gauge, after some miles, around 2.000rpm at cruise speed, pressure is around 50-52psi. At idle speed it is around 20psi. (Engine block temp doesn't exceed 86C)
And yet, oil light sometimes flickers at high revs and sometimes stays solid at idle. And sometimes doesn't, even at idle.
Lowest pressure I ever noticed was 15psi at idle speed after a long way drive.

Since the vehicle is equipped with an online oil pressure and engine block temperature monitor, shall I worry about this oil light issue?
Please advice.
Cheers.

Most probably just a faulty switch. I would replace it with a good one.

Thanks Dave,
I have to check the free cable after separation from the loom, right?

If the wires are okay, then it could still be the switch. New things can also be faulty.

Yes, they could be. I'll check.

Since I can read enough pressure on the gauge, it means there is a circulation all around and oil thermostat is doing its job, right?
Shall I loosen the banjo connection of the turbo to check the oil?

Tdi oil pressure switches can be cheap junk. A number of years ago I went through about six in quick succession, all with similar symptoms. The common factor was that I was, at the time, using a local quarry to wash off the bottom of the vehicle by taking a quick woosh through forwards and backwards. The switches simply were not waterproof, and once water got in, they were knackered.

Don't rule out the switch. The 300Tdi oil pressure light's sole function is to tell you that you need a new switch. I have only ever once seen an engine with a genuine oil pressure problem and that was a new vehicle where somebody had forgotten to put an O ring on the oil pickup when they built the engine, so it was sucking air in at idle. Unless something breaks and dumps the oil, they just don't have oil pressure issues. ---

Thanks for your contribution BogMonster.
Yesterday I removed the cable connection and left it hanging in order to check the light. It was still flickering.
So the problem was cable, like Dave T. commented.
Then I pulled the free cable up and fixed it there temporarily and tataaa, light was gone.
I have to replace that cable.
