Top end Clicking Ticking
Hello,
This issue was mentioned last week but I mistakenly said that the noise was from the air con compressor. The noise occurs at start up but gets much worse when turning on the AC. There is an intermittent clicking or ticking noise from the area round the air con compressor. It is the kind of noise that a solenoid makes when engaging but this is rapid, 2 or 3 times a second but then it slows down, then gets faster etc etc.
It is really hard to see exactly where it is coming from. I removed and inspected the belt and the tensioner, but all seems fine. It sounds like it is coming from the turbo but then if it was the turbo actuating mechanism but I wouldn't think it would get worse when turning the AC on.
Any advice, ideas or musings gratefully received
Thanks
David

David, did you resolve this issue? Only ask as it seems similar to a noise mine has started making.

Peter,
I did it resolve it, but not in the way I imagined.
I ordered a new alternator pulley but meantime discovered that the 2 of the 3 rivets that hold the 2 pieces of the top idler pulley were missing. I removed the pulley, and split it in two to find that the bearing was inevitably worn out. Bought a bearing for about £2, put the pulley back together and the noise reduced. After a couple of days, no noise at all. I now have the alternator pulley but have not used it and everything is now OK 4 months on.
If you want any more details, just ask
David

I'm not sure if the clicking is supposed to happen or not reading through different threads it was commented on as being "normal" when AC is turned on after startin the engine but it doesn't sound right to me.

That is how it started with mine, just when the AC was on and then the noise would stop when I turned the AC off. Then it started to make the noise all the time. Now for several months it is OK again.

May I ask how you rejoined the two halves of the pulley?

Yes, no problem. I used standard aluminium rivets again, but I am keeping an eye on them. The original ones were steel rivets, but they obviously didn't work very well as 2 of the 3 were missing
