I used it a lot about two years ago and found it really useful. Don't expect instant success, there's a load of information available, but it can take time and effort to find what you are looking for.
Most local libraries seem to have free access, so you could try before you buy. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N). Where is she now? It's not a car, it's a way of life! |

My wife has been using it for 15 years or more. It's great if you are going to get your DNA tested (and she certainly recommends doing so) but she prefers 'findmypast' for ordinary family history research.
If you can afford it, it's probably worth getting both. |

Just to add a bit more, as newcomers, you'll get a really good first year deal from Ancestry. It does go up a lot in the subsequent years, and it's not possible to get around it, but we still think it's worth paying for.
The DNA testing has been fascinating, not least because it turned out my wife's maternal grandfather wasn't her grandfather at all, and she has now discovered (and met) several half-aunts, uncles and cousins she never knew about. Sadly, it also proved she had spent the last fifteen years researching a family she wasn't related to! Once Mrs Co1 gets into it, you may well find your access to your family computer becomes severely restricted, and you'll be spending a lot of time in graveyards and County Record Offices, but it is wholly addictive, and a great thing to do. |

Ancestry have been great for us. We've had several family members tested and been very pleased with them.

Following this thread because it's something I've been considering for a while.
Meanwhile, there's something about this turn of phrase made me smile...! 
Hopefully goes without saying that there's no offence intended there. I know exactly what's meant, just that it conjures up images of family members having to pass a DNA test to keep their place at the breakfast table!! Ha, well the cat was rejected for being too human...!
Joking apart, it's a really easy test to do and Ancestry keep you well informed of its progress. We're waiting for mine to come back any day now. Mrs JtP likes them because you can also upload tests done by Ancestry to other DNA sites and expand your potential results. They also offer you hints which can lead to more potential matches. She found a photo of my maternal grandfather this way, something we had no idea existed. |

Can't say about Ancestry, although they seem to get good things said about them, BUT I would recommend you steer well clear of Forces War Records, all they want to do is sell you access to a Researcher!
My grandfather had a completely unique surname, and I knew his rank & Regiment and they still couldn't find him initially! This was despite being the only member of UK Forces in WW1 with his surname, but I cannot get any info about my other grandfather as his name was far more common, but have no info beyond he was in WW1, unless I coff up for a Researcher! |

My Kiwi uncle has been using a number of these sites to research the family background, which is mainly in the UK. He adds to this with UK visits and trawling through public records. He loves it.
As for giving out my DNA to a private firm? Not. A. Chance.  Monsieur Le Grenadier

JR have you tried "Lives of the First World War"this is (was) a website run by the Imperial War Museum to obtain as much information about WW1 soldiers. It has closed to inputs but may still be open to research.
Ancestry now own the National Archives so have he most records available, Find My Past can only go so far. Ancestry do a free trial period so you may get lucky during that period. Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |
