Defender 2.2 Puma - Oil in Charge Air Cooler Exhaust Duct
Found the exhaust duct from the charge air cooler split (causing engine to throttle back). While changing it I noticed there was some oil smeared around the duct where the split was. There was also oil smeared on the inside surface of the duct.

Is it normal for the turbocharger to release some oil as vapor during normal operation or is this indicative of failing bearings in the turbocharger? The engine crankcase breather hose is connected to the air-cleaner-to-turbocharger intake duct; could the oil be from the breather? By the way, my engine does not show noticeable oil consumption between oil changes (every 6 months). Would appreciate some guidance; don't want to wreck my turbocharger. Thanks.

Hi,
It is normal to get oil in the inlet duct, I think it will be from the crank case breather.
Over time it builds up and can appear to be excessive.
After the EGR valve, the exhaust soot mixes with the oil and this looks terrible.

Clean the pipes and check them in a few months time, if you are concerned about it.

Thanks for the reply. So that I understand correctly, is what I'm seeing oil that starts off in the inlet duct (from the breather) and eventually works its way through the turbo charger and charge air cooler to the exhaust duct? You mentioned only the inlet duct so I'm not too sure.

Fit a Provent filter and this should stop.

Use the forum search facility (search "Provent") for more information.

Thanks JST; my conclusion is, it's not a concern. While I have you; I don't see a Maintenance Schedule item to check the PCV valve. Do you know how often this has to be checked?
