Highlands and Islands!
Been done to death no doubt - but I don’t pay extra postage to send stuff south of the border so why the hell is it always a premium to send it north. Such a joke. If you don’t need to get it on an actual boat it’s not an island, it’s still mainland. Rant over!

I used to live in a surcharge zone, so can feel your pain.

However, it's worth pointing out that the higher costs to deliver to such areas are introduced by the couriers, not the retailers.

Most retailers don't have enough margin in the average value of their order to allow them to carry the excess cost so the customer pays the same price as everyone else in the UK, so they have to pass on those costs to customers. In the area in which I work, if we didn't do this we'd make a loss every time we sent anything to a surcharge zone, which obviously isn't viable.

I think most retailers would absolutely love to be able to flat rate their delivery costs and charge everyone the same amount, but the couriers make it largely impossible to do it sustainably, unfortunately.

Was looking at something the other day - for the life of me I can’t remember what it was - but it was £10 shipped to Europe and £15 for H&I. So it was going on a boat if sent abroad and possibly quite an onward trip, but to get it North of the Clyde cost an extra fiver? This seemed just ludicrous.

It costs us more to deliver to NI than it does to Ireland because the parcels go to Ireland first and then get routed to NI.

Sorry! I read the post and ranted right away, without reading the detail of everything. Richard Lochhead, MSP has been leading the charge on this, so well worth sending him a letter or email.

Also above - totally agree it's the couriers at fault. This became a 'thing' when fuel prices went silly about 5 or 6 years ago, but as is usually the way, once prices leap up, they take ages to fall.

Personally I've often raised it with retailers and asked them to reconsider which couriers to use. The good ones will. Donald

Some retailers are exceptionally good - if I order from chain reaction cycles it’s free over £50, that’s to elgin, or even Florida where I am now - that’s international, for free, and within 36hrs.

To be honest it was just a rant - totally having a moment! I think DR & RL have a lot more important issues to assist Moray with at present 😂 such as firing all the lollipop folk to save council money, then needing to spend thousands on making roads safer at school locations “pure stupidity”.
