Well, own experience (see above) albeit a single one and reports such as the police warning Defender owners and recommending security measures. But you may be right. It's possibly the big emotional impact of just a few incidents of car crime - of a kind that I don't hear of around here (e.g. ram raiding, arson, stripping body parts).

So the route will be Guernsey (staying in WWII B&Bs), West Midlands (Solihull of course, avoiding greater Birmingham), then straight through to Scotland missing Yorkshire

I partially agree with Huttopia.

'there's a chance you'll be absolutely fine' albeit a small chance.

no to be fair you generally only get to hear the bad news. I would suggest car stripping generally happens over night and not on farms, hotels etc.
not in the defender necessarily but car jacking at retail parks etc is another problem or at a location you frequent ie home.
hopefully you won't be falling into any of the above so I'd suggest with a little common sense you'll be just fine.

Travel a bit further north from the midlands / yarkshire and miss all of the car jacking or whatever else goes on.......

Some lovely spots aound Durham & Northumberland
