any how I've gone and done it.
got me a garmin 820 and it seems to tick the boxes I'm interested in and a whole more and probably even more if I learn how to. ps. did I mention I'm off on pilgrimage. 518 miles off road and 37,000 ft climbing over 7 days 
no support so having to pack everything into a small ruck sack to keep the speed up. check out Camino de Santiago (French route)  |

I now swear by Komoot, a German app I use on my iPhone for biking and hiking. The garmin bike sat nav and the Satmap hiking sat nav stay in the drawer. Komoot gives turn by turn instructions.

are we comparing apples for apples?
often people get the latest tech and compare it to the old bit of kit it replaces and hey presto it's loads better. I can't say whether yours is better or worse but I believe the garmin does turn by turn navigation along with generating rides of a desired distance using 'heat maps', it allows a group of riders to all be indicated live on the map and loads of other features including recovery heart rates, vo max, ftp, and so on and on. like I say it may not be as good as some stuff out there but it's certainly not shy of features. |

Enjoy your trip Caterham, sounds like a great adventure.
I did the Trans Pennine Trail over four days on MTB (a good few years ago) and I’d love to do another multi-day trip - preferably more exotic than the outskirts of Hull, Manchester and Liverpool  2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey

well I'm back and it was epic.
the garmin was fine for recording stats but in terms of navigating us it was un-necessary as it's so well sign posted. bearing in mind that almost without exception we were on the trails and in some cases we just couldn't ride some of the rocky up hills - I think we managed all the down hill sections even if I slammed myself and the bike side ways into a great flat slab or rock..... our biggest days were 172 km with 1228 meters ascent and 135 km with 2030 meter ascent. amazing scenary and weather. completed the ride almost to the hour (6.75 days) - France over Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostella just north of Portugal.
highly recommend it. |
