Getting a garage to change cambelt 300tdi defender
Hello! I have owned my defender for around a year now and it needs it's cambelt renewing. I don't feel quite confident enough to change it myself this time around but maybe in 5 years time when im a bit more mechanically confident. I can change brakes /service and remove rads etc but I'm thinking of getting a local land rover indy to change the cambelt.

My defender is a 1997 300tdi and I know there is a modified cambelt kit for the later 300tdis but what other parts would you guys recommend on replacing whilst its in the garage?

Cambelt
Tensioner?
Aux belt?

Anything else? Would I have to ask for the modified cambelt kit or would any land rover indy know to fit it as standard? Also, what would a rough price on a cambelt change be just so I know if I am being ripped off or not.

Sorry for so many questions! Thanks in advance!

Water pump and p gasket too.
Also check water hoses for damage /degradation.
If you have the time to go slowly with the car not needed then it is a doable job for yourself.

So the water pump and gasket can be replaced after the cambelt has been replaced?

Depending on what work has been done to your vehicle in the past, the p gasket tends to leak, and the water pump may be at the end of its life. Whist you have bits stripped down to access the cam belt probably wise to replace these bits unless you know they are sound. Can be done afterwards if you wish.

I bought a kit from Bearmach, with belt, tensioners and the improved pulley, cost £70 I think.

It didn’t have the crankcase gasket, that cost me £14 from LR.

That’s what the belt looked like after around 75k....very near failure.

Do you have a garage in mind. If not, might I suggest Island Landrovers in Essex. Martin Zammit does all the work on "Wallace" , my '98 300 tdi. Recent cambelt, rad, then head gasket/ skim and front discs and pads. Excellent chap, and knows his stuff, only does Landy's. 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

Other have given sound advice on the parts options.

I don't have the skills to do major work so I bought the parts online as it can be a lot cheaper and asked a local garage to fit them.

That belt is worn but still a long way off failure. If that's the wear from wandering belt over 5 years or so, it needs doing but still quite a bit to go. Cheers

It never ceases to amaze me how some really worn out bits will go on and on if you’re stuck, but other well inspected and serviced items that look perfect can then suffer a complete failure a few weeks later.

I buy my belts and critical parts from a local or reputable supplier. There are cheap fakes out there and low quality bearings. Don’t take a chance with timing belts Thumbs Up

300 Tdi belt is a pretty simple job, 200 Tdi can be a little worse with the long bolts in the case corroding. Just make sure you do the crank bolt up tight. Just run your belt round two revolutions and check your marks again.

Have you got the revised injector pump mounting bracket on your engine? It’s needed if your belt is like that from running against the timing case. Fitting the improved pulley helps but really need to cure the problem with the bracket.
