Engine lifting chains

I've just setup my 2 ton engine hoist and now need to get some chains/straps to attach from the hoist hook to the engine. Can anyone recommend anything? It's actually a 300tdi in a Disco rather than a Defender - though it's going to be rebuilt and put in a Defender later down the line.

Is it worth getting a hoist leveller or am I better off with a 2 leg lifting chain set? (or both?)

First time doing an engine lift out so wanting to make sure I don't mess things up. The disco is going for scrap though, so should make things a little easier.

Never had an issue with doing it that way, just take it slowly and stop if things start going wrong. Ed

If you’re scrapping the disco cut the top slam panel out and lift the engine gearbox and transfer out as one. I’d buy some shackles maybe. Don’t get the crane/pump handle stuck against the bumper

the closer to get the hook to the engine the better as you’ve got to go quite high to clear the front on land rovers and they have a deep enough sump.

Thing to remember about an engine crane is it lifts in an arc not straight up.

Ratchet strap can be handy to pull the thing level.

If you’ve not a lot of experience take your time and be safe. Level, flat and smooth surface for the wheels makes life easy.

I prefer a forklift you don’t have to fight the arc

Thanks guys

I think I'm going to get the angle grinder on it tomorrow and clear some room to get the rear lifting eye in. I might also take off the front section to avoid having to lift over it.

Will invest in a 2 leg lifting chain kit too.

I managed to get my hands round the back and attach the proper rear lifting eye in the end. It was a real pain but got there in the end. Hopefully they'll hold the engine nicely now.

Incidentally having done engine swaps (in a Defender which is far easier than a Disco) using a 3 tonne digger, fork-lift, engine-crane and chain hoist I'd definitely vote for the chain hoist.

Much much more controllable than any of the other options. Ed
