New Tyres
Hello All,
The rear tyres on Small's,1950/51 8o" are coming to the end of their lives.
I made enquiries about replacing them with Security 600 x 16 which it currently has on each corner but am advised that these are now Chinese. Now I have nothing at all against China, they make component parts for some of the biggest names in industry. But, when it come to the safety of Small I am no going to cut any corners.

She is quite used to the ride quality, or lack of it, so is not looking for any great improvements in that or noise levels.
The spare is rubbish and has not been used for 20 years and the front tyres are Security with about 10 years, at current mileage, left on them. The rims are stamped 1950 so will presumably need new inner tubes as I doubt tubeless will be suitable
Does anyone have any recommendations, I was wondering about Avon replacements, they will cost around £1500 for 5 , but is there any real advantage.? The vehicle is used 95% road use and 5% gentle green lanes. Pure road tyres will probably look silly on an old Series One
Your help or thoughts please.... Thanks 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

I drove my One Ten from Wales to Morocco on a set of security mud terrains, albeit in 7.50 16 size. There were fabulous, maybe a little noisy, but Seeing as the pattern suited that era of Land Rover, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I would recommend them for your purpose. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Thanks very much. If changing all 5, is it best to stick with 600's or do wider tyres fit standard rims.
I would have thought that the wider the noisier, but what do I know Big Cry 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

You may be able to find somewhere with stock of Lassa OK-144 in 6.00 x 16. They have a similar tread pattern to the Security.

There is also the option of Viking Multigrip, made by Continental and fitted to JLR Classic restorations;

[Edited to add] Fedima Maxima is another option in 6.50 x 16.

I would personally stick to the original size, you can ruin a great looking Landy by fitting wrong size tyres. That’s only my opinion mind you. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Thanks All. Plenty to think about and consider, but will stay with the 600's as everything is pretty original so will try to keep it that way.

I think that 7.00x16 was already an option by '51, but in theory that's the widest you can fit on your rims. The TMs would be perfect but that is a hefty price.

Both sizes look good IMO provided that the tread pattern looks appropriate. Thumbs Up

Interesting pictures, nice to see the differences. Certain it is the 600's as with a suitable tread they look the best to my eye.
Small just wants to be driving it which is brilliant and why I bought it for her. Considering we went to look at a Citroen Traction all those years go and came home with the 80", it has all worked out rather well. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Whistle 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

One thing to consider, if your heart is set on Avon Traction Mileage is that vintage tyres do (have done) 10% discount on their vouchers at Christmas time. If you can wait a couple of months then you'll get them for a little over £200 each.

The Vikings are a great alternative for £150 too. Much better than the Longstone options.

I paid just £60 for my Lassas but they've been out of stock and more expensive than this for a while now. Camskill had them in stock briefly.

I have to say an 80in with 750’s filling the wheel arches looks really good Thumbs Up
My 53 ex Aussie 80in came with new 600 bar grips, makes for interesting driving in the wet!
