I recently rang Land Rover Assistance with a punctured front tyre. I told them I didn't have a postcode and that I was on an unadopted road and only had the name of the nearest village. They told me not to worry as they knew exactly where I was located. (I was in a DS not a Defender). Not sure if they also use WTW but it's a useful tool to have on your cell phone. Defender 90XS SW

Your location can be narrowed down using the cells of the cellular network, but if your DS is a recent one with the alert buttons on the headliner then it gathers data from the in car satnav too, it also downloads the ecu log to the control centre who then resend it to the patrol comingbout to you so they have a bit if info about the problem if it has an error code Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

That's their "non emergency we might answer after 76 minutes of you sitting ringing and ringing and ringing and ringing and if we feel like answering"

Just a few points:

999 and 112 will work in the UK as long as you have some connection to some mobile network. If you're in a total signal blackspot, and they do exist, then you won't be able to make a call. If you're in range of any network, not necessarily your network, then you wil be able to call emergency services.

The app will give you your three word location without a data connection, so that if you are in a situation with only a poor mobile connection, you can still get the information out.

I've heard of it in the past and written it off as a bit of a gimmick, but it seems to be getting more widely known, so I may well encourage it among my scout group!

Recently I have been on the scene of two accidents in remote areas. One a cycle and one a motorbike. In both cases we were struggling to give an accurate location. I have an app on my phone which gives a OS grid reference.
Made giving the emergency services an accurate location really easy and probably saved significant time.
Everyone should have something similar IMHO Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

remember no all places have phone signal Exclamation

In an emergency without a phone signal, if you ring 111 as an alternative to 999 the phone will seek a signal and connect you to someone in the UK to take your call.

Four weeks ago while in a remote part of North Yorkshire without a phone of internet connection I needed the emergency services I dialled 111 and was able to contact the Police in York.

111 is the NHS helpline number? do you mean 112?

I meant to put 101 but fingers failed to work correctly.

112 used to be the D.Q. number (directory inquiries) Don't make old people mad.

If you have electronic OS maps on your smart device then there is an app that converts grid references to latitude and longitude that some might find useful. AFAIK it is not available for Android OS yet, but that might have changed.
The name to search for in the app stores is “GPS OS Grid Reference” - it also doesn’t need a data/phone signal to work Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

I have this app incase I run into difficulties when out stalking. A postcode is no good in the middle of a 12,00acre estate, and whilst I am familiar with grid ref/co-ordinates I would be happier being able to txt my Wife three words telling her where I am and if I need help than texting her a grid ref. It is a great app for those who are less familiar with grid refs in my opinion. Hope never to use it but at least I have something that will be off use if I run into trouble.

I downloaded this app yesterday, sat last night with nothing worth watching on the box so I checked the app and watched the GPS signal wander all over the place, the max it moved was six squares and put me in a neighbours house.

I don't think ill tell him as his wife is rather smart and he was on nights. Whistle Don't make old people mad.

A friend of mine in the police told me about WTW about a year ago. They were looking at using it to report/record crime scenes more accurately. It's amazing every 3m square over the entire world including the sea can be located with just three words!

The best feature is you can take a photo and the WTW words location on it to give an instant location.

I believe Mercedes are already using it to allow you programme the SatNav? James
