Help please, opinions on new tyres...

I used to be indecisive but now I just can't decide!!!

I was trying to make this decision on my own, but I'm going around in circles, so advice/opinions please....

It's time for new tyres for Doppy, 1991 200tdi with 178k on the clock with et0 rims standard suspension (I think).

Tyres purely for show pretty much, but want a set of Mud Terrain that I can use if ever wanted on the Puma.

So narrowed down to the following:-

- Cooper STT Pro 285/75R16
- Cooper STT Pro 265/75R16
- Toyo Open country 255/85R16

I really wanted a tall tyre so 255 or 285 preferred. But worried 285 might be too much for the 200tdi? Also worried with et0 rims they might stick out too far?

STT Pros only rated to 68mph, but that's fine sits nicely at 65mph.

255 Toyos are great price, tall not so wide but have concerns over availability should I ever need one quickly. Can get cheap online but local tyre places want £30per wheel to fit, which is ridiculous. Don't look as good at the STT Pros Embarassed

Ruled out BFG KM3 as just too expensive unfortunately Big Cry

Help please! Thumbs Up Thank you.

I can't help with the tyre types having not used them but I had the previous Cooper STT in 285 size on a Tdi 90 and it pulled along perfectly well, even with heavy trailers. The same tyres are now on a 110 with et0 wheels and whilst they do throw a little bit of mud up the sides, they don't stick out far enough to have legal implications. Let me know if you want some pics and I'll grab a couple for you?

With regards speed ratings on the STT Pros, don't they offer some in a higher speed rating with a different carcass? I seem to recall they did a light truck version but that may be a figment of the imagination... 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

I am running the open country, they are impressive, quieter than you would expect for such an aggressive tyre and good road manners too.
Will take a bit longer in lower gears if engine not performing, but otherwise a great choice.

I'm in a similar situation but think I may go in a different direction with Devanti Terratoura's. Small British company that I've heard a lot of good things about.

I have STT Pros in 265/75/16 and I have zero complaints with them.

They are more than capable on road and excellent off road, even in the snow.

I will be getting the same again when these are past it.

Apologies for the slow reply, here's a couple of photos for you. 285 75 r16 tyres with 16 x 8 wheels, ET0. They throw a little bit of muck up the sides but Gwyn Lewis mudflaps seem to catch the majority of it Thumbs Up

Have you considered tyre longevity into your maths? I can't speak for the KM3s but my last set of KM2s did >60k and I only retired them because of damage to sidewalls from heavy off-roading. There's on average about 10mm of tread across all the tyres but didn't trust them as an everyday tyre.

Not the same vehicle but when I had my L322 the KM2s were roughly the same price as the GG AT2s and Wranglers that I had but lasted 4 times as long so were much cheaper in the long run. But it is a hell of a lump sum to stomach. Ed

The decision has been made! Whistle

I did consider longevity and completely agree, hence spending the extra on BFG on the Puma. However, on Red they will likely perish before wearing out. The current Insa Dakars have loads of tread but badly perished side walls. Thumbs Up James
