Injector seals - engine damage?
Morning...

Having driven the 350 mile trip home to my folks the td5 has developed problems starting, all the signs seem to point to a leaking injector seal:

- takes a long time to fire & start, pumping the pedal eventually gets it going
- initially sounds like it's firing on 4 or less cylinders
- when warm it starts and runs fine
- no loss in power once warm
- Hawkeye not throwing up any relevant error codes
- all glow plugs and injectors seem to be operating/firing as they should
- no loss in coolant
- the head was done a year ago so whilst I 'think' the symptoms point to seals, they should be fine as they were replaced when the head was done AFAIK

If you think I've incorrectly diagnosed please advise.

So, my question is, am I going do damage if I now drive the 350 mile trip home towing a 600+kg tailer? Or I should I urgently be trying to find someone to do the seals tomorrow before I set off?

As an update, rather than try to start this morning I first purged the fuel system... it started first turn of the key instantly like it normally does... and appeared to be running on all 5 cylinders...

Does this still point to leaky injector seal(s)?

Faulty fuel return valve?

when your removing fuel lines adaptor to replace none return valve you find out how good filter head is brass and aluminium , copper and steel good recipe for corrosion

99.9% certain it will be the injector seals. Has your oil level gone up or does the oil smell strongly of diesel. If not I dont see an issue with driving 350miles.

When the leak is still minor you will get combustion gasses into the diesel rather than diesel into the oil. The worst that happens with combustion gas into the diesel is you will start getting debris in the fuel return system.

I have driven my Td5 for many miles with the injector seals gone. Mine goes fairly frequently (every 12-18months) on one cylinder due to an issue with one of the injectors.

Bizarrely the last few mornings it's back to normal, no problem starting... is this normally an intermittent problem at first?

When mine had same symptoms it was the injector seals. My advice is go genuine!!

No. Not in my experience. Once it starts to be a problem it only gets worse. That is with same scenario, so every morning for example. Obviously the longer you leave it for the harder it is to start, without priming system first. I would be surprised if they have failed so soon, unless done wrongly, which I find hard to believe on a new head.

Is misfiring a sign of bad seals?

I noticed last night after my lift home that she is firing on less than 5 cylinders... wondering if this is related or a sign of a different problem...

Injector seals is normally bad starting only. Not misfire once started and running.
