Funny in Australia in victoria the government just bought mercs to replace their Toyota , very expensive kit so i find it amusing that Landrover think there is no market for commercial vehicles. Now there are zero options in heavy duty 4x4 market beyond toyota so all these government departments buy the over 100k AUD toyota by the truckload

There is a market, but it’s tiny - irrelevantly so for a major manufacturer to specifically develop a new vehicle for - hence Toyota not replacing the 70 Series, and all specialist G Classes being versions of the ancient W463 - including those water bowsers, which have been a disaster:

dont know where you are getting info toyota are axing the 70 series , they will axe the V8 but have confirmed they will continue to produce a variant of the 70 series. Usually double cab utes and even land cruiser is in the top 10 selling vehicles each month in australia. I am in industry that actually purchases large quantities of these vehicles and i can tell you 1st hand they are not cheap even at fleet prices. Seriously Landrover need to think beyond Europe / USA and China. Check what the biggest markets for heavy duty 4x4 vehicles in the world.

I wonder how many issues are inherent in the G Wagen, or have been built into the finished product by Quik Corp who build the conversion?

There’s no replacement planned for the 70 Series, it seems like they’ll just try to keep doing the absolute minimum to comply with safety and emissions standards.

If there was a valid financial case for JLR to compete in those markets (which they’ve been absent from for decades), do you not think they would be doing so? Even a firm with the global reach of VW has decided it’s not worth going it alone.

JLR hardly has the best track record in evaluating financial cases in the last 10 years, hence the reversal out of many, with many millions, billions actually, written off so I'd not look to them as having set a very high bar in that regard.

If there is to be a pickup offering added to the new Defender lineup, then why would there not be a niche market in selling "chassis cab" style arrangements to third parties? Indeed, if one thing is clear it is that the commissioning parties for such conversions - military, public sector, corporate - seem to like to constantly up-spec and end up with very bespoke expensive vehicles.

It can only reinforce the existing strategy for the new Defender and help reinforce the Defender pillar elements of "Engineering Integrity" and "Durability".

Because it won’t be available as a chassis cab unless there’s a far more radical change planned. The market for tiny runs of very specialised commercial vehicles is with specialists, not major manufacturers.
