I used to see many of these little fellas around the industrial estate, there is a little woodland. When I used to give our prince ( RIP pal) a walk around there late on at night, he sometimes used to sniff them, and they used to curl up. I am sure we had a hedgehog in our garden too. No good for sleep though, for such a small animal they make a heck of din especially when two male hogs meet in your garden it's a show of strength with noise the winner is usually the loudest they are particularly good at doing this at three in the morning. In scarce supply in our neck of the woods now I’m afraid. Lovely animals.

We (me and the current Mrs Rashers) were awoken a few years back around this time of year with a loud knocking. It was a warm night, we had the windows open. It sounded like someone with a false leg walking around our front garden. Couldn’t see anything from the window so went to investigate. We found a poor hedge hog with a McFlurry pot stuck on its head. We carefully removed it and the little thing ran off into our garden.
I done some research and this was a common occurrence a few years back, the hedgehogs being lured by the sweet residue inside. That’s what we (and the local wildlife) get for living on a side road three miles from a McD’s. Thanks McDonalds. |

Doc P, we have those as well and your right, they wake us and the Dog up on a summers night with the windows open.
I wouldn’t want to live in an area without either a hog or an owl so I will put up with both |

I too have a resident. Built a hedgehog house a few months ago, and it was occupied within 3 days! Loevly to see. Usually at dusk, but occasionally in the mornings too.
One of my neighbours has a mother with 2 hoglets, so I've built a 2nd hog house hoping to get a 2nd resident when they fledge. Wonderful pics this thread.
To think as well that someone proposed a garden tax as well! Just imagine how damaging that would be to native wildlife and the whole fabric of what makes our country so good not just for us to see and live in but for other creatures. There are quite a lot of bats around at the moment I've seen as well, and a Barn Owl not too far away, less than a mile from Home I've not known any in that area before. Definitely seems like things are on the up in that respect with wildlife diversity and numbers. Pity so much wildlife gets mown down on the roads though, I know some occasions some people found it unavoidable. Argh, don't mention bats. They're a bloomin' nuisance! In my field of work, we're compelled to spend tens of thousands of pounds a year either surveying or providing habitats for them. There's now so many around that it's hard to believe that they still require the level of protection that they're afforded by law. Darren

Not seen a live hedge pig for years. Pity as we have an ideal environment for them, away from roads with plenty of food.
