Just a quick question and food for thought
My partners 2ltr Discovery 5 has a need to add ‘ad-blu’ to the engine to allow it to run effectively with in the emission regulations. The engine will not start if there is no fluid in the tank, and the tank tends to only cover 5000 miles or so.. So, assuming that the new Defender has a similar system for its diesel engines, what happens if you do an extended trip out of europe where the additive is not available ...? the vehicle may become stranded from what I can see... just my musing .. or have I got it wrong ? Will the RoW spec require Ad-Blue? If not presumably you can just turn it off?
If all new new diesels will/do require Ad-Blue then I'd assume it will be common to stock it and therefore in time I'm sure you'll be able to buy it in the bcak of beyond? In the meantime, just carry a bottle?  James

As DEF is essentially urea, there are few places in the world where you couldn't get a locally produced substitute!

Simple solution. Just do like this VW driver and you can endeavour any distance expedition without fearing Adblue shortage.

It is quite possible on trucks to 'disarm' the addblue as there have been numerous reports of hauliers being caught out and prosecuted.
Not so likely on a private vehicle I suppose? Our local Sainsbury's stocks the stiff now so anywhere a European lorry travels (and that's most places in the connected world), I would expect there to be access to the stuff. |

I wouldn’t assume it will need adblue.
Recently bought a new Isuzu pickup (not starting a debate-needed to tow 3500kg without buying a Discovery 5) and they are emission compliant without adblue (salesman was keen to point this out along with 5 year warranty) Just saying....  He who dies with the most toys...wins! |

The L200 is another current pickup that doesn't require DEF.

In the current Land Rover owners manual it states that you should not carry Adblue in the vehicle - it does not say why.
If you have the Service Plan option Adblue top ups are free at the dealer - approx £36 otherwise. My wife's Discovery Sport needs a top up every 5 months. This is a drive in drive out service. Both the manual and the service team both state that overfilling is as bad as letting it run out so it cannot be filled to overflowing as you could with screen wash. Also it needs to conform with ISO (whatever), if you are a long way from home will this be a problem and would you trust the locals offering you 'Adblue' sold in old plastic Cola bottles. It is made from urea but no you cant make your own! Personally go petrol or 300TDI and save the aggrevation. |

Adblue is not even on the ADR list, so why you shouldn’t carry it with you in the vehicle... fill it up before you leave and if needed, carry a small can if you’re really that long in an area where you can’t get Adblue. |

Are dealers really pushing a top up service .... what a poor show by the current generation. It’s like topping up screen wash and I buy 20l for £18 delivered.

I wonder how many Evoque owners even know how to top up the fluids, or for that matter open the bonnet. Many of them don't know how to drive, so checking important things is likely to be well beyond them. |
