Steering drop arm replacement
Replaced the steering drop & ball joint for a new one. No matter how I try, I still have about 5mm gap between the top of the steering arm and the steering box. Removed three times and cleaned splines - torqued up to 178nm and tab washer on.

There is a mark on the old drop arm inner splines that shows around 5mm of none spline wear (if that makes sense)

Based on that and other pics on google, I think I am OK.

Should the tab washer be bent upwards as well towards the steering arm, or just bent down over the nut flat?
On the plus side, the steering feels better now. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Tab washer should be bent up into the cut out shown in your 1st picture and down to lock the nut to the arm

Cheers, I was thinking about this last night, thinking how does this stop the nut undoing with only one side bent down. Hammer time! 1999 Defender TD5 110

The gap is normal, it’s a taper spline so as long as it’s done up F.T. then all will be well.

When I replaced mine I didn’t fold the washer over immediately.

I torqued the nut up every night for a few days first. Then folded the washer over.

It’s a chamfered spline so ideally should never reach the top or it would rub when in action. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Thanks both.
If F.T = 178nm then yep. its F.T.

That eases my mind. 1999 Defender TD5 110
