Hello all DCPU owners,
Has anyone seen or fitted a 110 pick variant of the bars below, instead of a standard stick/hoop set? Something that will still fit a canopy? I'm asking as I'd like to consider a set-up that will allow a roof tent to be fitted after of the b-pillar. Thanks in advance for any pointers...

It is, but there's nothing on their site I can find which does 1/3 of that to fit a 110DCPU tub. I know they do special orders, but was wondering before considering that probably expensive route.... Monsieur Le Grenadier

Blackwolf, that's exactly what I am thinking of. Hank, interesting. They do call them hood sticks, but I agree with you that they look too big for a standard hood. Also, at the cab end, they clearly wouldn't allow for the DCs cabin shape with the roofline and the protruding seating area. But I think half of the SD one above will.....we're getting there.

I'm not certain I follow your requirements exactly. Do you want the tent to be mounted over the pick up area? As in, you do not want to use a rack mounted to the roof/rear ladders?

Sorry Hank. In essence I want the same profile as a standard hoop-set, but heavy duty enough to put a roof tent on top, likely the iKamper. With the iKamper in place, the hoop set would be exposed, but when the tent is taken off, I’d replace the canopy. Hence looking for something that can do both roles. Sonic’s certainly looks like it can achieve that as it seems to follow the dimensions/profile of a standard hoop set, sitting as it does within the width/length/height limits of the tub. The one you sent through, whilst called ‘hoop set’, seems to me to be too tall. Basically I would like to have an iKamper at some point in the future but neither want a full length rack with ladders (as is common on so many DCPUs) or a hard canopy from Truckman or similar, to support the weight of the tent, as I want to push it rearward (I do not like roof tents shoved forward over the driver, just an aesthetic thing). I’d like to keep the character of an open tub or canvas hood day-to-day, but with option for the iKamper. I want my cake and to eat it
 . But if the middle hoop on the SD version above is not too far forward (and looking at where it sit compared with the wheel arch, it doesn’t seem to be), buying half the set might be the option as the profile seems small enough to fit an Exmoor standard canopy over the top. I like that idea Grenadier, and is something I have thought about previously to replace my full length Brownchurch rack with chequerplate floor, without losing the practicality. So my cake needs the canopy to be modified to be used with or without the tent (actually not a tent, but whatever I am carrying on the roof), and allow full length loads to be carried (normally boats/canoes, lengths of wood) so would need a matching hoop or roof bar at the front of the cab. Even then, I would be losing my current lounging/viewing platform on the roof and an easy way to attach an awning. Best solution I found was a full exterior roll cage, which I do not want, so I keep my rack.
But I will be watching your progress with interest, in case it leads to some new options. Good luck! I did see a stronger looking set of hoops on a DC around here recently. I will try and track it down and get more info. |

Yes, the full external rack is an obvious option, but I don’t like the look of it and the standard DCPU rack, which I do like, doesn’t achieve what I want. I’ve just emailed SD, so I’ll let you know what they say. Maybe we have a better chance if a number of us want to buy a set? Will keep you posted. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Heard back from SD. Sadly the military hoops in the photo will neither fit nor (as far as SD are concerned) be structuraly strong enough to support a roof tent. I don't quite understand why, they look pretty robust and the weight will be spread, but I suppose they don't want to accept liability. So, they say custom is the only option.

That would be me ! It was very well made but it only bolted to the top of the tub so would be fine for a tilt but I very much doubt it would be strong enough for a roof tent. Thanks Bob. I’m curious why a tent wouldn’t work? Given half would be firmly attached to the roof of the cab, which is strong Anouilh to support it on its pwn, this was about having something under the rear when pushed back? So 50% on the cab with probably four fixings, then 50% distributed between the two hoops, each with a pair of fixings. Would that not be strong enough? Monsieur Le Grenadier
