Wales 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Zambezi Silver
Rear door strut (V2 Vs V3)
I currently have the V1 rear door strut but I'm a bit tired of warning passengers to "open with care" or "keep hold of the door". It's had countless repair jobs.
Anyway, out of the two newer soft open, which is better? My head tells me that the newer model V3 will obviously be more thought out but I'm more of a fan of the mounting location of the V2.
What are you guys thinking?

Out of interest, what brand are you looking at? This is on my list as a modification but given where I've started parking the Defender, I won't want a door that just fires open as it will go straight in to a wall!

I have the v2 and it is unobtrusive and soft opening. Clearly if there are obstacles to prevent 90 degree opening, care is still needed.

I started with the V3 but found that it was flexing the top of the door frame where it was mounted too much, so changed to the V2 - much better IMO, and looks more factory and discreet too

Forgiving my ignorance, does the 'soft-stop' allow you to lock off the door part way through the movement so you don't HAVE to open it the full 90 degrees?

Deffinatly the V2 for me, just seems the best place to locate it, very OEM + strength of bottom section of door.

The soft action refers to when the door reaches its fully opened position, it will not stop with a jolt as in V1 which you really have to hold onto all the way. Instead it eases to the final position.

If however you only want to open the door part way, you have to hold it, there is quite a bit of pressure pushing it open depending on the incline you are on.

Also it does take more effort to close but still one of the best mods I have done.

I think it's going to be the V2 then. I did wonder if the closing aid on the V3 was worth going for but after reading another thread on here, maybe not.

Well over the years we have sold thousands of the gas struts. Version 1 is no longer available from 4x4overlander. Can confidently say that V2 is more popular then V3

V2 is slightly more involved in fitting as the door card has to come off and the reinforcing ribs need drilling. Take care NOT to drill the outer door skin. People comment that this one looks more factory fitted.

V3 or top mounted one is in theory easier and quicker to fit. Door bracket is straight forward. Main bracket goes behind grab handles but sometimes the grab handles have been fixed on different spacing Banging Head Banging Head so may need modification. Care is needed to attach strut to door bracket the correct way.

Both are relatively easy to fit if have a modicum of technical ability, the right tools and some common sense.

They Don't like it hot

loaded up the van for a long trip with the radio club in the sun

Went to shut the door and the strut has locked up - i can only presume from getting hot.



So I need a new one and some bigger screws now as trying to close the door pulled the plate off.

I presume I can order a replacement strut on its own?

Could be an isolated case - mine spent several months in late 30's / early 40's temperatures out in full sunlight the whole time without fault.

Most if not all hatchback cars have gas struts on their doors. I've seen them fitted on access hatches on rooftops where the temperatures are baking. Never known one to lock. They usually fail in the other way by losing their gas.

Might just be a one off?
