Canada 2000 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Epsom Green
Diff problem
Had a bang in the drivetrain a few times over the past month. Could not reproduce it. Finally last Friday it went BANG!!! Again and a constant whine ensued with a squealing noise. Pulled the front diff and found a single bold had come loose and fell into the axle case. Chipped a couple teeth on the crown gear and it was still in decent condition.

I will rebuild this one and secured a spare to reinstall and get back on the road. đź‘Ť

Just thought I’d share so others can learn. Never seen a diff failure like this before.

If that all the damage you ended up with I think you’ve had a lucky escape.

Same experience before - customer reported noise from drive train. The right way to diagnose it was to remove propshaft and drive only with the rear one. Noise was gone, so it was time to remove front diff. 3 bolt heads from crown wheel were broken, making mess inside.
I have seen this also on small passenger cars. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
