2008 Puma bulkhead i'm guessing it's going to be pretty bad but i was wondering if it could be repaired rather than having a new one fitted whats the best way i can check ie how much of the dash do i need to take off to inspect or am i better going to a specalist to look as i'd sooner have a repair done due to funds heres some pics of the rust this was hidden and painted over when i bought it so yes i've bought a dud now there is me as well another dud
the first pic looks ok but looks bodged yet i have to be hopeful, I have chipped out at the side nr the inner window bolts if you can see , also how can i prevent it happening again

Shocked

That's not good, windscreen frame out, all dash / column out, doors off, decent body shop repair, paint and oodles of the wax of your choice into every nook and cranny.

Best of luck, Keith

Thanks
Just been back to see if i could get the corners of the dash out but i think the lot has to come out as you can't just take out the corner pieces as in the older models
Managed to push a screw driver through the front quite easy where the rust is showing through so i have packed for now with Dumdum then back in the defender pushed the screwdriver sideways and felt more rust as i can't do much until tomorrow night as i am dropping it off for re greasing, oil and filter changes , but he's not a Defender specialist as i will have to see the local LR specalist on wedensday.
looking on ebay now for something painted as i don't trust the galvanised ones as they may have been bodged up and then dipped as i can see the painted ones for what they are.

Just a wee push in favour of galvanising somehow. I bought a new, primed bulkhead. Tried to waxoyl it myself, using all the proper diy kit of hoses, pumps etc. A real PITA in my opinion - just makes an unholy mess. So, I spoke to my local galvanisers and they were happy to just dip it for me. Got it painted by a friend's paintshop, and 11 years later it still looks absolutely as good as new.

So, even if you find a good bulkhead, that you're happy with, do have a think about getting it galved yourself. I'm not saying it's essential, but if you're spending the time and money on changing the bulkhead anyway, why not make it last? Donald

Whatever you end up with, if you want to protect it with a cavity wax, Waxoyl uses only the very latest 1960s technology.

However, more recently developed products (which are easy to apply, and do actually work...) are also available:

If you're going to replace the bulkhead then I would go with Donald's suggestion and get it galvanised. Fit it and forget it Very Happy Defender 90XS SW

Thanks guys
I'm meeting with Wayne later today who has been doing defenders for years in Bolton he's going to have a look and give me the option of repair or change
If I get another I will probably pick up the one in the above picture and do as suggested and have it cleaned up and galvanized
I have the widow screen booked in for Thursday and all the engine gearbox and diff oils seals and plugs in for changing along with all the grease nipple's doing tomorrow I may put back the new screen until it's sorted as it's going to get messy

Definitely put back the new screen until your bulkhead is done. Waste of effort and money to do it now and risk damage when it comes out again for bulkhead repairs. The windscreen frame will almost certainly need repainting and may also need replacement depending on the amount of corrosion.

Update
Spoken Wayne at Track and Field and he recons it can be repaired with an after market part for the top that runs accross to the centre then adding a piece all along under the pretend vents then rust proofing new seals between windscreen and bulkhead and while the roof has to be propped up i have asked for the roof to be taken off and also resealed using genuine JLR ones and anything else wants changing then i will get the windscreen replaced as they are just around the corner from the garage
All this if when the dash is off it is repairable.
I also asked about galvanising if a second hand one is needed but recons the can distort so lots of protection as Joe mentioned Bilthamber as i use the shampoo wax and wheel cleaner they do i'm sure it will be great
So it's in tomorrow for the greasing and oil etc changes Bulkhead end of May I reckon
I will keep the page updated when i have any info and try and get pictures
I think I will be keeping this Defender for a long long time or lose a lot of money
Thanks very much for the advise you have given much appreciated Bow down

I’m also shocked at the amount of corrosion there, mine isn’t much older, how can there be such a big difference in similar aged vehicles? I hope you don’t mind me asking but what's the ball park figure for the repair only?

Comments off utility truck are what a lot of people are saying

I actually think as the wings are bodged up and other bits I've noticed and considering the engine has had a rebuild I think it has been on its side then left in the elements before being repaired ie rust then shoddy paint job as this is how I have found the rust on the bulkhead
So now it's a restoration project rather than just my work vehicle
I may one day soon rename it from the Pooma to something much nicer.
