Can my Puma be driven just 2WD?
As per another thread, currently replacing the rear UJs. The rear prop shaft may be damaged and require replacing, that could take a week or so to arrive. Can I run the Puma on just Front biased 2WD? Logic tells me yes, but there are so many quirks to defenders I’m wondering if there is a reason for it to be no. Diff damage, transfer damage, dirt in parts etc. Keen to know asap. It’s fine to drive in 2wd. Just engage the difflock and your away. I personally wouldn’t tow or put too much stress on it though.
Be prepared for some horrendous backlash though, it’s not a pleasant drive. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Also be prepared for unusual and unpredictable handling, it is quite safe if driven sensibly in front-wheel-drive. It will be awful in snow though!

I have before, both front or rear but as mentioned go easy and I wouldn't travel far or put stress on it.
And it will feel different as mentioned by Blackwolf above.

In my case, I just used it to get to the shops a few times nothing long distance or high speed. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Isn't there a suggested speed limit with diff lock engaged or am I getting confused with something else?

Just moved it, no slap or backlash, feels really light. Quite nice actually. Will have to make do with the Mrs Audi until the job is done. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Only with both propshafts fitted, so it would be in 4 wheel drive "mode"... then the difflock would cause wind up between front & rear axles.

put the rear prop nuts back on the handbrake studs to stop the drum coming off, dont rely on that screw!

ref the top speed, yes there is but its not mechanically limited more of a warning in that if its slippery why are you doing more than 40mph.

its was something we would joke about in croatia as we tore down the wooded tracks working off roadbooks when on Croatia trophy! Cheers

I found I needed a few washers, IIRC two per bolt on the handbrake drum bolts before the nut.
Reason being was that the thread on the shank of the bolts did not go all the way down to the handbrake drum concentric to the flat surface of the handbrake drum.
It just didn't look right to me unless the washers were on, but I may have been a little too concerned.

It looked to me like the nut thread would foul the non threaded section left of the shank of the protruding bolts and it's was only something like 2 - 3mm or so.

And yes, that handbrake screw isnt to be trusted not that keen on the design of it to be honest anyway! Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
