2.4Tdci EGR blank question
OK so my ERG is making a proper clatter now.

Options appear to be, replace and this could last another however many years or blank off.

If it gets blanked off the garage have to tell the ECU its closed off I guess? is it literally a piece of metal bolted over the hole that is left?

And that;'s it job done, no more clatter?

Thanks

Essentially yes, although getting the garage to 'tell the ECU it's closed off' is a bit more complicated than that statement suggests. The way that is achieved is to have the ECU remapped so that it doesn't look for inputs from the EGR. Specialist tuners such as BAS offer this, either as a standalone service or as part of a performance map.

The search button is your friend as this has been covered many times, but also take a look at the BAS website so you'll get an idea of the relative costs.

It's also worth considering that interfering with the EGR is illegal. Whilst it's true that the current MOT is very unlikely to detect it, that may not always be the case and the fines if caught are significant. It was also recently suggested that it may invalidate your insurance, being an illegal modification, although I very much doubt if that has been tested. Darren

Get a remap and get it shut off electronically. If the rules change significantly you can always reactivate the egr as with a Bas tune Thumbs Up

I don't think it is a change in the rules you need to worry about (since the rules already prohibit this), it is a change in the test equipment and test method which would allow this to be detected. You cannot see that the EGR is or is not working.

As noted above, you can always turn it on again.

I suppose that it is just possible that a really astute tester will fail a Defender if the EGR valve doesn't make the characteristic "chukka-chukka-chukka" sound on shut off, but a good valve should actually be silent anyway.
