New Jimny
We’ve had a Jimny parked in our town centre the past few days as part of a Suzuki marketing campaign and the more I see it, the more I wonder if one of the reasons for the delayed delivery of the new Defender is that (whilst smaller) it basically looks how you would have expected a proper modern interpretation of the 90 to look. Yes the grille is different, but the rake of the window, the squared roof, the wheel/body/height proportions, the round headlights etc etc, it really is, in the flesh, a mini 90. Perhaps they stole a march on the Def and JLR had to go back to the aesthetics drawing board and make some changes. They’d look pretty foolish just releasing a larger identikit model... I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I think they've changed their minds on the design of the new Defender more than once.

When I did the factory tour in late 2015 just prior to the end of production our tour guide pointed out a new defender mule saying that was the final design which would have key elements of the existing defender in it's styling and would be revealed in the latter part of 2016, now 4 years later we are seeing prototype mules which look nothing like the one he pointed out!

Personally if it looked like a 'Defenderised' version of the new Jimny I wouldn't be unhappy. 2015 Defender 90XS HT

You've got to admit they've done a pretty good job on the Jimny. Just out of interest does anyone know what their projected Worldwide sales are for the Jimny? Defender 90XS SW

In a world full of image conscious SUV softroaders, 2 vehicles stand out today as genuine old school 4x4s.
Suzuki Jimny and Jeep Wrangler.
The Jimny has a waiting list of more than a year and the Wrangler is breaking all production records for Jeep.
Proof indeed that there is still a worldwide market for real 4x4s.

Now here's a thought. The Jimny sells between £15K to £20K. Then there's a big gap before the Wrangler starts at £45K and goes up to £50K, at least at the inflated UK and European prices.
There is plenty of space in there for another genuine, beam axle equipped, vehicle.
That's right where the old Defender used to be, but the new one won't.
Who will fill the gap? Confused

Well, there is one other vehicle, which in basic form would fit nicely in that gap, if only it were valuable here, the 70 Series Land Cruiser. Granted, the big V8 diesel might be a pricey beast, but sure Toyota could find a nice EU compliant 6 cylinder to go in there. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

No worries about this, the gap will be filled soon by another two vehicles: New Ford Bronco and the unnamed yet one developed by Ineos under the "Project Grenadier" !

If the Grenadier looks anything like this Autocar image it should do well.

If it looks anything like that image Jim will find himself on the receiving end of JLR’s lawyers surely. Or is the Defender likeness old enough to be out of trademark? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I really can't see the appeal of the Jimny. Is it the price? Styling?

Presumably most will buy as a supermini alternative to Fiat 500, Mini etc. A fraction perhaps as weekend toys?

Lots of folks on here seem to be saying nice things but has anyone actually bought one?

My brother in NZ has one on order for August delivery. He has gone for the two tone paint auto version and thinks it will be fine for the slower NZ roads found in South Island and a few tracks.

I dont think you can patent a likeness with cars ..just about every eurobox looks like it had the same grandparents and two of the offspring have mated"The ineos looks great but i doubt the final car will look like that ,its just hype/spin to garner publicity!

You can patent protect a car design/shape, Porsche did it with the 911.

And JLR just won a case against Land Wind for ripping off the Evoque, but that was an almost an exact facsimile. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
